Differences between 03 l61 and 06 l61?
Tuesday, August 13, 2013 4:14 PM
I bought a 0 miles l61 from mongorat on css.net, he says its an 05 or 06. looked for differences between the two and my 03 from the cav, and cant find much. Seen that theres a slight increase in hp and tq. Was wondering why ? Planning on pulling the pistons, and connecting rods to replace them with forged low compression pistons and forged connecting rods, arp head studs and boost it. Will factory valvetrain hold much boost ? Or do i need to upgrade springs, valves, ext. thanks guys !

Main problem....CPS "crank trigger wheels" are completely different. aka reluctor wheels

Oil pan, and mounting points. If you use all accessories from the 03, and swapped over crank shafts it would work.

I'm not 100% on everything since I know enough to be dangerous about ecotec's.

Yeah i gotta find out how to tell what year the short block is. But he said 05 or 06. Even if its an 06 it may still work because thats the year they changed it but not right at the start of the year.

I plan on using my 03 oil pan, mounts and other necessity's. worse comes to worse i will have to swap my crank nd wheel which isnt bad. I should correct what i said i put a down payment on a 0 miles shortblock and head. No pan, thermo housing, valve cover.

I guarantee if it is an 06 it has the wrong trigger wheel.

Some 05s will also have the wrong trigger wheels....Like 05 cobalts, HHRs, G5s, Saturns, and a few more.

Ok, how can i tell what trigger wheel is on it, ive been looking at the pics of the shortblock and my 03 and dont see a major difference. Any part numbers or markings that would tell what trigger wheel is on the new motor?

If it came out of an 06 it's the wrong wheel heck if it came out of really anything but a J chances are it has the wrong wheel (not sure on the ones that came in Malibus and stuff at the time). Biggest difference will be the pan internals and block should all be standard stuff however except for the wheel again ECOs didn't get VVT till 07 iirc. I'll wait for the bigger ECO experts to chime in

Thanks guys for the info. I have an 03 thats perfect except the head( intake valves bent and touched eachother) so i will get the crank knife edged or something while its out and put it in the new shortblock. Any more info is greatly appreciated.!

Thats not exactly true, this was just went over on a facebook group the other day.

Some '05 Delta L61's 100% had the 6+1 trigger wheels from the factory on them.

James, pull the crank sensor out, and spin the motor around while looking through the hole, if there is only 7 notches (2 really close together) and not 58, then your good to go.

My 06 HHR didn't have a 6+1 and it was built in Mexico in 05.
