Ecotec Head Issues...Any Ideas??
Saturday, October 18, 2014 11:50 PM
Okay guys any ideas?

I built the head 3 angle valve job with 96lbs compressed valve springs from supertech. Used stock valves and lifters, Ran the engine for about 100 miles or so and took it apart to turbo and complete my supertech valve train. The pic you can see the top has worn places where it looks like the roller arm was making contact. My only guess is that either the stock lifters cannot handle the springs or my lifters were wearing out.

SO anyone else run these valve springs on stock lifters?

we have had this problem a few times in England, the reason is the type of roller rockers.

Either fit the cast (later spec) roller rockers or grind down the pressed steel versions to create some clearance

The new supertech springs fix this issue. You need to run the new cam followers from 2005+ any new ones bought from gm should be the new style.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

Cool thanks guys. Ya I decided to get new cam followers and go with a solid lifter setup. The springs are 98lbs compressed so this was definitely an expected outcome.

@!#$, I just realized that you replied to this Jason.

Well I was going to go with these

BLE Lifters

But after doing some research it looks like these require some milling to install. I'm not sure if I want to venture down that road right now.

Anybody run these on their 2.2 ecos?

Any solid lifter setup is going to require machining and shims to get the lash right. It'll also require you to recheck the lash frequently.

Can I ask what you're doing that requires 96lb springs?

It's 96lbs compressed, decompressed (word?) they are 78lbs.

This is my turbo project engine. Just getting her ready for the turbo build this month. I built it, then ran it for about 500 miles, then pulled it and found some issues like the pic above.

@!#$ I can't get my fingers to work. I ran the engine for about 100 miles then had to pull because I wrecked the car. The picture is something I noticed in the tear down.

So you're running what supertech marketed as the 78s? Because if that's the case that's 100% why you're having issues. You need to file the casting marks down on the machined followers just like Vocky said and you'll be fine. That's why they were discontinued and replaced with the 75lb kit.

Ya, since the first post. I also bought the revised followers from GM (2005+, I believe). The ones that you mentioned above.

Everything seems to clear now. Would you suggest filing with these new followers?

Well you mentioned 96s in the original post so...

Anyway, yes file them down if they're new style (machined) followers. You'll see where to file when you look at them. The issue is the supertech retainer.
