Quick question. Is there supposed to be a gasket between the pick up tube and the pump? Also is there suposed to be one between the pump housing and the thin metal cover?

no gaskets...... although it has been recommended to use a small amount of RTV around the pickup to pump, and pump to block.

SMALL being the key word

^^I wouldnt think so seeing that the whole assembly will be submerged in oil anyway, thus canceling out any gaskets needed down in the pump area..

Thats just a guess, but I really don't know..

well in the Rocket parts build book it says to use rtv to gain a slight increase in pressure.

No gaskets used. I didn't use RTV either, and my pressures are good.

HEY!! lol

My machine shop hit a little bit of roadblock with the brace and the holes lining up.
Are there two different braces for this setup.. Look at the below pics

I have this one

Now Gary has this one installed, its like a cast brace, looks way different than the one above.

Their having a problem fitting the windage tray WITH the first brace that I have pictured.. I was there at the shop as they were showing me.. With the brace and the tray sitting on the block(not bolted down) none of the holes line up to bolt the brace down..

Is there anything special that needs to be done other than whats written down in this thread to make the brace fit exact.?

Thanks.

you have to elongate 2 holes on the windage tray... and the nut/washer will cover approx 2/3 of the tray, works pretty slick.

The braces look pretty much the same to me...... his is just facing the other way. Their both nothing more then stamped steel. Matter of fact, I didnt even use one in my engine.

Lol Brian yea my engine builders actually brought up not using that brace... Did you use something else to brace the pickup, or did you use nothing at all?

You can always tack weld some floppy jollopy together.

-Trailblazer SS - not so custom 6.0L - custom intake - custom tune
- (1) 2.4L on an engine stand (1) blown trans (2) good quad trans (1) eco trans = party

I am in the middle of this swap right now and just wanted to verify a few things....

1. what all needs modded on the oil pan? that center section needs dropped 1" i know... but looks like there are some other welds and mods done in the photos... and i am not exactly sure where or why and how much.

2. what is that hole drilled in the oil pump itself for? shouldnt the pump already have the needed holes? isnt that why we are modding the block? (the one pic shows a freshly drilled hole in the pump itself... but i dont see an explaination of this step in the write up)

3. how exactly do we line up the oil pump to make sure it has the proper mesh with the drive gear?

4. of all the parts listed for the swap... which are safe to find used? which can be "made" (tray, support ,etc) or substituted with hardware store parts (nuts and bolts etc) and which should be bought new (assuming you can find them)

1 I have some pics at home that might show this better. The side of the oil pump rubs slightly on the corresponding edge of the oil pan.

2 I am not sure what pic you are referring to. The oil pump does not need any holes drilled in it. It might have been for the guide pin dowels which are not needed. In fact I would highly reccomend not using them.

3 If I remember correctly one hole is there so all you need to do is bolt the pump down mark your hole and drill carefully. I would mark the hole by spraying some paint in the bolt hole of the pump. Use a center puch to make sure your hole starts in the center of your mark.

4 The pump and pick up tube I would just buy new considering it is the hart of your setup. The pick up tube bracket I would get used. I bought all hardware from my local auto parts store. I would say gop ahead and use a used windage try.

These 2 pics kind of show the pan being modified on the side to accommodate the oil pump. These pics are not of mine but mine looks the same. I just sanded down the edge of the pan and the edge of the pump until I had clearance.

This pic shows the grinding mostly of the edge of the square plate on the side of the pump. This pic is from my engine.

I am still not sure what or where I went wrong here but for some reason I needed a stack of washer to raise the brace up to meet the pick up tube.

^^^^ The bolt that is supposed to go there is one with a threaded rod on top, so that the bolt first secures the windage tray to the block, then a nut secures the brace to the bolt. But I don't think it should be much of a problem using a bunch of washers, unless for whatever reason the bolt backs itself out.

Thanks for the info. I do not forsee that bolt coming loose. I put it in pretty tight.

Wade, your good man.. My machine shop had to use washers on mine as well since that bolt with the threaded rod on top was too big for the whole that was already tapped in the block in the first place.
