Anyone have any info about the differences in doing this on the 95 2.3L block? Are there any, or is it pretty much like the 2.4L with this mod?

Yes, I know that, but the 1995 2.3 Quad 4 was the first year with the balance shafts. I want to delete them to add the earlier 2.3 oil pump and I am trying to figure out whether or not I can use this information as a guide.

oh really, the 95 had balance shafts.. hmmm, considering that the from the 2.3 to the 2.4 the block is almost the same in that regard, I can't imagine your block being much different. But I can't say that 100%

I was thinking of getting an earlier block, but I was trying to figure all the options. So far I have checked a couple of places and they said they didn't think they had any of the quad 4 blocks. These were just the smaller yards right around my area, which is in the middle of nowhere you wanna go. I am surprised these smaller yards have anything, they must import there cars from somewhere else. Everything around here is just about a 20-30 year old hunting truck, or is rusting away in peoples front yards.

The "template" is just a shim that comes with new melling pumps.

Drill the hole small and then increase drill sizes up to 9/16”. You will break through the casting and then drill into the oil passage casting. Make sure the final drill with the 9/16” bit is done slowly and smoothly, since you have to install the 2”x9/16” sleeve afterwards. Cool the sleeve and coat it with sealant. Gently tap it into the hole until it is flush with the block deck. Remove the oil galley plug to clean the passage and make sure the sleeve does not protrude into the oil passage bore.

Why is this done? Is it a very important step?

Most people do not follow that method

x2 That method tends to leak oil. It isn't necessary to drill outside of the casting. You can drill all internally and don't need to use a sleeve.

I'm surprised this still isn't stickied lol.

One thing i find funny is throughout this entire write up, it doesn't say what size allen plug to use to plug the side hole that you drill on an angle.

Did anyone else NOT use the dowels? or am i alone on this lol.

^^^ ill be using the dowels.

not only for precision because it can be done just fine using the bolts but for reason of doing it the right way and the way it was designed to work.

I'm tired of wasting my time... now I'm breakin' free.

I bought them but it was going to be a PITA to use them, so they sit in my tool box, still in the bag.

OK, since you haven't searched, I dont know why I'm helping you but just so you will get this $hit out of this thread.

You can't run an LD9 pump without the balance shaft asssembly.....get over it, not possible.
JPB's pump is nothing but a Melling pump with a washed up spring, just get a melling pump, save time and money.
If you dont want the balance shaft assembly you have to run the 2.3l pump and do all the associated mods with it. ie: drilling block ect.

Bringing this back from the dead...

Im gathering the parts now to do the swap when I build my motor.

Im having an issue finding the windage tray new. Ive called GM and spoke with their "vintage" parts division and they show 0 in stock.

Where is everyone else getting theirs? I guess worst case scenerio is pulling one from the yard.

Best bet is to get one from a yard. That's where I got mine. I took it out, and they gave it to me for free. There are tons of 2.3's in the yards around here.

Thats what I was thinking. There are about a dozen 2.3 olds achievas in the yards around here so finding one wont be an issue.

The local dealer gave me the discontinued run around and gave me the vintage parts number where I was told they had 0.
