Project 3400 Cavalier In 2020
Monday, May 04, 2020 6:36 PM
So I picked up a 2005 Grand Am GT with a 3400 and a 4t45e and am in the process of tearing out the motor of the donor car. I have a 2001 Cavalier with the 2200 and 3t40. I thought I would start a build thread to keep a log of my journey. Not many people are building cavaliers anymore and not much traction on these forums anymore so take this a content. This is the start.

Good luck with your swap. I need to get a 3400 engine,,, one of these days.

Interested to see how it goes. What ECM are you planning on running? Have you read the sticky in the 3rd gen forum?
There are certainly issues that you're going to have to figure out with this combination.
Good luck, and if you have any issues or questions, shoot me an email, or better yet, jump on the official j-body club Facebook page. I'm not on here a lot lately. Someone just sent me the link and said I should drop in. 😊

Plan on running the grand am ECM and have it flashed to the impala to run the gauges. I did read a butt load from the sticky and other sources. I'm still debating on just pulling the dash out of the Grand and using everything. I'm sometimes on Facebook but on my wifes profile. Don't like facebook unless i'm browsing classifieds or Jbody.

Have some updated. Front engine cradle is on the ground. Only took about 5 hours with all hand tools and no lift.

Does anyone have a parts list of some sort from the grand am that's worth keeping for the Cavi? Did some searching but nothing came up.

Do I need any electronics from the interior? Minus the PCM?

I'm currently in the process of reconditioning the engine. Heads off, going to be shipping the heads off to get them inspected and cleaned up. Bottom end is fine for now. Cold weather and house plumbing got in the way. Cavalier is also off the road for the season.

Nice, I'm doing the same thing with my '95 Grand Am. Make sure you get the good intake gaskets and timing set. https://wot-tech.com/index.php is a good resource for parts.

Not many updates. Some really small stuff like getting ready for the brakes to get swapped over in the fronts. Some other house projects came up.

Some updates. Playing around with the knuckles from the Grand am. If you are looking to do the swap you'll have to get creative with the CV axles. You will have to swap ends on them. The engine block is going to work here as soon as i invest in a engine hoist to get it up on my trailer.

Some updates. Now that's the weather is getting warmer been spending some time out in the garage. Engine/ trans is out of the cavi. Need to clean up the engine bay and paint it. Take care of a rusty fender while I'm there. The V6 is at my shop about to be put back together.

Are you sticking with the 4t45 trans?

I just happen to reread this, and you said you're going to flash the ECM with the Impala flash, but that won't work with the 4t40 or 4t45 transmission.

I am sticking with the 4t45. If I'm not mistaken the impalas also came with the same drive line as the pontiac grand am. I'll figure it out either way.

I believe Impalas with a 3400, still came with a 4T65E....

Anyways, any update on the project?

Buying a new house. The project is on standby for a while. Life gets in the way.
