What are balance shafts? What do they do? how do they work? and how do they rob power?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. it is extra weight on your crank shaft to balance out the offsets of it and reduce vibrations from the engine. Extra weight that it needs to get spinnings robs the same way stuffing 20s in your fender wells will. I believe when you remove it, you have to install an oil pump frrom the 2.3l which never had the balance shafter because the 2.4's has int intertwind somehow.
that is incorrect. the weights on the crank are counter weights althogh they are there to reduce vibes and balance the crank.

balance shafts are seperate shafts that are also weighted to help further reduce vibrations, in our motors they are chain driven. removing them would add power due to less rotating weight. same concept as a lightened flywheel. our oil pump is driven by the balance shafts so removal would require the 2.3 pump conversion, that pump is driven off the crank. this mod requires some very careful drilling of the block to create a new oil passage along with oil pan modification.
Like I have done, right guys.
The look like a little cam shafts inside of the oil pump, and the whole oil pump weighs about 30 lbs or so and the 2.3L on under 10 lbs.
Plus the 2.3L pump is soooooo superior when it somes to oiling and a 2.4L pump.
It is like comparing yourself with the Incredible HULK!!

Has anyone ever done a 2.3 pump conversion? How hard would it be? And would that free up like 30 hp from the engine since the 2.3 has 180hp and the 2.4 has like 150hp and balance shafts. Would that just make your 2.4 a bored out 2.3 with around 185hp...........It makes sence to me but sound to good to be true, lol

No you ain't gonna get that much, but you are going to get some HP. Probably about 10 to the wheel from just that. and then oiling so you don't have to worry about much.

I suppose if I remember correctly since it has been a while since I tore apart a 2.4.......isn;t the oil pump only driven by one shaft????so couldn;t you at least remove the one shaft that isn;t uses to drive the pump??
not the way they are setup, but even if you could your talking major vibrations then because of the 1 shaft, they are made to balance each other out so it would make things worse.
