I was thinking about cutting the side out of my air box so that the car would get more air but it would still go through the filter. Does anyone know if this is a bad idea?
its a good idea. lots of people do it. some even drill holes so the air comes in from the fender well where the tire is.

just go to ebay and get an intake. they all do the same thing, so you don't have to buy an expensive one, and you can get some really cheap.
yeah that would work if you don't have the money for an intake. But my advice.............at least take $20 and get a K&N air filter.
Ya i already had the filter, but now i cut two holes in the air box. It actually sounds pretty good when you hit the gas at high rpms.
that's redneck engineering at it's best.....i modified my airbox with a hand saw, took the back half right off and it sounded awesome

I did the drilling into the fenderwell thing. I wanted to get cooler air, so that seemed to do the trick.

Anybody got a pic of where they driled it out. Just drill holes in the side of the box that faces the fender? Sounds too easy. I gotta try this.

Dont bother drilling, just cut the whole back out of the air box. leave the side open. as long as you dont drive in dusty conditions all the time it should be alright.
Drill through the bottom clean through to the fenderwell. No pics, sorry.

Nitro how big of a whole did you drill through the fender well?
so just use a hole cutting adapter on a drill and cut a whole on the side of the box facing the fender, or the bottom of the box itself? I'm intrigued. I don't have the patience or the tools to remove the whole damn overengineered box, but am looking for more airflow through the K & N filter? Just wanna check before I cut the wrong place and F$@k sumthin up. Thanks, Bob

well i'll tell you this.. LOL It's a bitch to rip out all that piping below the hole in the engine bay. I know this I did it on my '99.. i had to yank out the windshield wiper resavoir too.. that held the liquid to squirt your windshield. But yeah.. it's a PITA to do. I have but a weapon-R Filter head on my Z24 as is right now.. i removed the stock air box.. but I left the piping from beneath. LOL i wasnt even gonna screw w/ it. hahah if you do remove the piping.. be careful not to break things.. they dont want to budge, move or come out at all. So just be patient and careful. if you do remove it.. maybe use a dremel w/ a cutting wheel to cut out a larger hole for a CAI or.. you could grind out teh hole w/ like a dye grinder. All up to you and what you want.. I would honestly advise having the muffler shop fab you some matching pipe up for the intake (if you have one) and get some new elbows and drop the filter head about 4-5" down the hole (after you grind it out) make sure nothing rubs... just make sure it's not in the way of splashing water.. if its gonna get wet get a bypass valve.. AEM sells them. but there's a decent CAI for you that you can build & Possibly EVEN attatch to yoru stock set up of piping. But try to get an aluminum intake tube first.. you'll see better results.

Not one big hole, I drilled about 25 1/4" holes so the remaining metal would act as sort of a screen so little animals couldn't make a nest in there.

Any trouble with water getting in their ?
when i got my ram air hood, i cut the back part of the air box out. th epart that holds the clutch fluid. it is the exact shape as the functional part of the hood. after i cut it out i put weatherstripping on it so it would seal with the hood. that sounded real nice
Absolutely no water probs for me as you see in the second pic I posted. What's left of the OE intake still faces down, so I could have the whole hood off and still wouldn't have water probs in the intake. I crash thru big puddles at the end of my street when it rains enough, tho mostly on the pass side, and no probs w/ intake or rad, etc.
No water probs for me either. The holes come through the fenderwell inboard of the tires, so no water off the tires hits the holes, even when the wheel is turned all the way.

use a saws-all to take out the bong and a grinder or dremel to make the hole by the battery bigger. then just leave enough of the stock airbox to hold the air filter in place----looks about as ugly as it'll ever get but it sounds wicked and it'll kill the afternoon when you're bored lol
if your willing to get a cone filter you can just take the whole air box out including the part that goes on top of the air filter and put the cone filter in the hose that would normally be connected to the air box, ill take a picture if you want just send me back if you do
what nate said, just get a normal cone filter and attach it to the piping. the air box comes out fairly easy. just re-attach the clutch resivior ti the firewall with 2 screws where the hole is on the resivior.
