2.3 circle track build suggestions

have a 95 sunfire and im swapping in a 2.3 quad 4 (has a ln2 5speed) looking to spend about 2000 on parts for this motor just wondering where is the best to put that and what part suggestions?

no rule regulations? if not id say do a hybrid 2.4 with the 2.3 parts and get urself near 200whp and blow everything on the track away.

if ur not into that then i guess just do an HO 2.3 with an extrude honed intake manifold/60mm, ron s. long tube header, solid mounts (not poly, SOLID), aluminum flywheel, and a hell of a nice dyno tune. you can find HO's in junkyards for dirt cheap, problem is finding them lol

HO, bold in around 200 HP. Tuner cats, $36 DEF file for tuning... read up on cam timing to tune in your peak TQ RPM...

Get off JBO... not a lot of info here that would actually help with building this. At all.

ive yet to see a quad do 200whp without the use of big cams, itb's, and a fully built high compression bottom end. chris turboquad 4 over on q4f did 212whp with all that. paul tjepkes did 201whp with stock 2.3 parts and 10.5:1ish compression in an LD9.

he's looking at only spending 2000. to me.. thats an LD9 hybrid that would blow away the competition.

Any my NA w41 rebuild made 198... but I dont go around on a fwd board barging about it.

Facts. The W41LG0 engines were made to be "high effort engines"

The LD9/LD2 was made to be emissions friendly.

Now, when we start "what ifing" @!#$ ****.. why not just get a LS7? Mine cost $330 bucks.

Pretty sure brad was just stating the facts of who has done what and got x amount hp.. not bragging...

And maybe dont go around a fwd board bragging bout your $330 LS7...

so the dub i have sitting on a crate in my garage will do 198whp? ... i think... yes.. i think i might just hold you to that. hahaha

but alas... its got high compression pistons, w41 cams. ld9 dont need that shiz. doesnt need a custom header, an off the shelf version works for 200whp.

and not everyone is a lucky bastid like you mr gm dealership worker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL second warning? My count is one, but its Kool.

Moving on...

Brad, if 10:1 up to 10.25: pistons is high comp....you have a lot to learn. They make books for this. I even may go as far as to say I have sited them Several times here attempting to help y'all out.
It was built for boost after all, just my def file that I got from Brian from Todd never had PE timing messed with... 42* advanced is not so great with 12PSI... But it would run away from said LS7 powered GTO on the interstate.

And the LSx commit... was more along the line of (oh God here I go again) "we could what if this STUFF all day"

It is my opinion that the 2.3 is a BETTER OFF THE SHELF ENGINE. Once you start messing with them its a horse a piece.

That said I am rebuilding my tired 2.4 this spring...with some help from the better of the two engines of course.

... And was slow then, I gave the last prom like 10-12* MAX in PE... a lot safer then 41*.
But compared to the prom I took out, Id say it was down AT LEAST 150HP.

. that sounds fun. I never had a chance to drive it due to a faulty trans. but when my build is finished it might have a different motor. but it will be an ld9 hybrid the best of both motors and still be fun.

Yeah, see, you're trying to make an analogy and failing miserably.

Going to a beer drinkers site (I highly recommend http://www.usbdt.com, btw) and talking about getting drunk would draw a parallel to coming to this forum and talk about performance or exterior modifications. It appeals to some, doesn't appeal to others, but is still LEGAL.

However, if you decided to go to that same site and brag about how you drank a whole lot of beer, then went driving through a residential neighborhood while school was letting out at twice the speed limit, I think you'd find yourself on a quick trip to ban-ville.

See the difference? One is legal and can be done responsibly. The other is illegal, irresponsible and dangerous to others.

Now STFU and stop bypassing the language filter.

When I had the 550's in it the car ran great.. the 440's and 12 psi with revving to 8K... I think that's what poped the gasket and head... I pulled timing for you so you would make it home. The car ripped, I was just sick of FWD cars...

Alas I some how have another one again.

Oh well, life gives you lemons, make lemon-aid right!

And who knows, maybe Ill break my 13.7 (that some how I made up at the race track, and with a missing micro switch for my 30 shot.)

lol @ this thread......

all I know is...... I want the speaker bracket from what ever front door I didnt pull it out of, in that purple Cav....... lol.

I did always get a kick out of the language filter/warning system on this site. Sometimes I wanna bypass it just so I know the mods know I'm still alive!

For the OP:

To make the HO come alive (even more than already stock)....... Light weight aluminum flywheel and crank pulley. 3 pulley aux drive setup (crank, tensioner, alt). Port match the intake to the head. 65-75mm T/B. Header...... TUNE!

Building from scratch for $2000? Good luck with that one. Labor for machine work can get expensive and good quality parts generaly are not cheap.

Personally I prefer the Quad 4 over the Twin Cam.

Thats why i said where is the money best spent thanks tho
and correct me if im wrong 2.3 and 2.4 = quad 4
but im assuming you mean you like the 2.4 better than a 2.3...............anybody have anymore info on 2.3 hybrid motor?

Re: 2.3 circle track build suggestions

The 2.3 is a Quad 4 and the 2.4 is a Twin Cam. I prefer the 2.3 over the 2.4.

Quick list of parts for a standard rebuild on my 2.4 when i was playing with them.

Diamond pistons $750
Eagle rods $350
Misc gaskets $200
Crankshaft $150
Bearings $125 (i think)
misc parts $200

total parts $1775

add in whatever machine work is needed, usually another $300-500 and you have my typical rebuild. The initial build had another $2500 in parts and probably another $200 in additional machine work over what be included in my typical rebuild cost. That was just for the engine lower and top end.

lol the quad 4 is more of a twin cam then the actual "twin cam".

Well... seeing that both had TWIN CAMSHAFT variants.. the 2.4 could be called a .... dumb oil pick up between two counter rotating balance shafts that helps with oil starvation above 5,500 RPM.

OR.. OR we could just continue making the best out of the two...

All things considered, both 02 Z24's have handled me, with all I throw at them (stock insides) for over 120K... They don't owe me a thing, That said, I still like the REAL QUAD-4 better. Just preference.

Lets see, Pistons 450, Cams (new W41 's from GM),450, gasket set (GM overhaul) 90, Bearing set with Melling Oil pump, 60. Rocket Parts Rods, 100.
Rebuild, 2 Hours of my time. about 1200 in to it...

2.3 FTW!

yes chris... lol technically their all quad 4s because they have 4 cylinders and 4 valves per cylinder anyway.

"real" quad's with real twin cams..... LD2 = .375 / 200* (intake and exhaust) LG0 = .410 / 212 (Intake an exhaust) W41 = .410 / 218* (intake and exhaust)

LD9 = .354 / 198* intake and .346 / 187* exhaust

lol hardly "twins" there
