Cheap Gas... (MN)
Sunday, June 26, 2005 8:20 PM
Alright... This is mainly for those of you in MN, and even more so for those of us around Anoka...

The average gas price around here right now is $2.05 to $2.10... BUT... has anyone been to that Exxon station by Anoka Tech??? It's been $1.90 for like that last 2 weeks...

Does anyone know why it's so cheap and how they can run a business liek that? It's Exxon Gas, same as any other, and I get my usual gas milage from their gas (24 mpg).

Yea, we drove by that yesterday... There were huge lines at all the pumps.

When I went to AHTC, they always seemed to be $.10-.15 less than everyone else. They were fined earlier this year too for selling too cheap (below cost).

I heard of a station gettign fined, was that them?

If they got fined once already why do they keep doing it? they can't possibly make a profit from selling so cheap.

And the lines are long, but if you shimmy your way to a center pump the lin is only 1-2 cars long at msot, the 2 end pumps are like 10+ cars in a line.

wish i could find a place like that around here. it's almost at $2.50 around milwaukee.

there is a radio station that hooked up with a gas station last year for a day to sell gas for 94 cents a gallon. that was insane. it made the news. cars were backed up like 5 blocks.

They don't make money off the gas... They make money off the people going inside to by food, cigarettes, etc....

I was just gonna post that, they price the gas cheaper cause they will benefit from the increased flow, upping revenue from random sales inside.

Why its illegal, is because our policy makers are dumb, if I want to sell a product at a loss, why not, They are just afraid that everyone will start selling below cost, and then they wont be able to gouge prices on barrels ;/

There is actually a really good reason why it is illegal, lets take for example, what happened in my town.

There are 12,000 people that live in Marinette, 12,000 that live in Menominee, and about 5000 in surrounding areas. 29,000 people all together. LOTS of mom-and-pop stores around about 8 or 9 years ago.

Wal-Mart moved in and started selling hardware goods (tools, nails, paints, etc) below cost. The local Ace hardware (called Jenquins) couldn't keep up. Only took a couple months to put them out of business.

Point is, the smaller volume stores can't keep up when bigger chains sell below cost. It hurts the economy...

yeah gas prices are getting outragous ($2.40/gallon) but it's still nothing compared to what people pay over in Europe. They're up around 5 bucks a gallon. I remember like 5 summers ago or so when gas was down to a buck a gallon. Now I'd be happy if it were 2 bucks a gallon.

It's this high b/c fourth of July weekend is comin up and more people drive now then any other time of the year,, give it like another week or so and it will down to 2 bucks again but the price or crude oil is very high too.. So when the price of oil is high it costs more to make gas.. thus gas prices go up... learned that in econ class...

Think of how pointless that is though. You drive all over trying to save $.09 a gallon, so even if you had a 14 gallon tank, and you filled it from bone dry to spilling over, you save a whole $1.26, a little more than half a gallon. So if you drive 10 miles looking for a gas station that saved you $.09, you just negated the whole purpose, and added that many more miles to the car

I somewhat disagree. It can create more spending by driving prices down, but it definetly kills small businesses.

Of course, lower prices and competition is a keystone of the free economy, but when a company sells below cost (at a loss) a product with the specific intention of driving another out of business, then it hurts the economy. Thats why its illegal.

are our cars alright for that E85 stuff that just came out? Because that is reasonably cheaper also, but probably cuts down on the MPG a lil bit because of the increase in Ethanol.

Re: Cheap Gas... (MN)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

DO NOT DO THAT.....i did......

cost me over $150 to fix all the problems...

1. Needed to drain the tank, cause the bitch dont run on that stuff
2.E85 burnt out the fuel sensor, so had to replace that, and the only way to do that is to drop the tank, and its expensive to do that...

on another note...i love living in the sticks, gas has not gotten over 2.10, and i can buy 90 octane for what it costs for 87...i love cenex

Its still $1.90 though...

So this is what, the third fine they've gotten this yea? And they're still going?

Its weird cuz its an Exxon station, so Exxon as a company cant be losing money cuz they have so many other stores.

Maybe, if their even making one cent profit per gallon of gas, since they have such high volumes of people, they're still making an ok profit?

i don't know. we used to have a phillips 66 station here in my town a few years ago that was always 10-20 cents cheaper then the rest of them in town. that gas station lasted less than a year. damn now i'm reminiscing (sp?) on the good ole days when gas was only a buck.
