make sure you use the right kind of paint too. you want a enamel not a lacquer, 2-3 coats of clear, wet sand between coats. And clean the @!#$ out of it before you paint it otherwise it will chip really easily.

Paint it black, and then paint over the 2.4L Twin Cam white. Then clear.

How I did it on my old gt was I used engine enamel as a base coat over the whole thing. Then I used enamel hobby paint, the stuff used to paint model cars and stuff, and painted it by hand over the raised letters, then cleared over top of everything with engine enamel clear. Worked great, and didn't chip. Looked awesome.
Mine was black base with red letters.
I think the white letters would look pretty awesome.

Tell him to stfu, your not fixing anything, your making it your own.

Steps would be:
1. Remove the idi cover (that's what it's actually called. It's not a cam cover, it's an idi cover. Just fyi)
2. Lightly sand off any stubborn dirt or oil residue. Don't score the metal, so use a high sandpaper grade, 220 or so. Maybe 300. Rememer, you don't want to remove any metal, just clean.
3. Wash it. Regular soap and water. Then rinse it again. Keep the water on the top and away from the coil underneath. Let it dry completely.
4. Make sure it's dry. It will feel a little rough to the touch because it's cast iron (I believe anyway).
5. Once dry, get your paint ready. make sure there is no dirt or anything left on it, and if there isn't, then spray it with the base coat engine enamel. Spray using light coats over the whole thing. Don't try to cover the whole thing in one coat. Use light coats. It will come out much better. Follow the instructions on the can for how long to wait between coats, and when it will be completely dry.
6. Once the base coat has dried, time for the pain staking painting by hand. Take your time with this. You can paint it however you want, just on the tops, all of the raised letter and sides, whatever you want. This is pretty obvious I think. Get a paint brush, sit down in a comfy chair, and start painting.
7. Once the lettering is dry, then clear coat the cover. Use the engine enamel again. and again, use light coats, and probably 3-5 coats. follow the instructions on the can again.
8. Once dry, put the idi cover back on and tell your neighbor to shove off.
