2001 Cavy part out!
Friday, December 30, 2011 11:55 AM
Well guys, another one bites the dust.
I’m parting out my 2001 Chevy Cavalier, Ecotec swapped, turbocharged, and almost ready to run.
For starters, this is a 2001 Chevy Cavalier Base Coupe 5 speed. No power options, no cruise, and no tilt. It had the LN2, but I pulled it for an Ecotec. The engine is in the car, all it needs is exhaust and either a tune or stock injectors and is a turnkey setup. The car was in an accident a few years ago. A deer rolled down the driver’s side, ruining the windshield, front fender, door, and rear quarter. The quarter on the driver’s side does need some attention as it was rusting from the inside out. Other than that, the body is in fair shape. Has 136,000 miles on it, original. The battery was relocated to the trunk via a Jegs relocating kit. And I swapped the rear end to a 2003+ rear bumper only, the tail lights are still 2000+. It has a 2000+ LSS/Z24 front bumper without the lip, but has the driving lights with pigtails for custom wiring and the hardware to mount a lip on it. I also installed a cheap eBay short throw shifter.
The suspension got some work. I started off with an upper front strut tower bar, just a basic Ractive, adjustable, but the shape of the bar wasn’t properly shaped, but it did the job. I followed that up with KYB GR2’s and Megan Racing lowering springs, which dropped it 1.75”. Then when the LN2 came out, I dropped the sub frame down, sent in and the control arms to get the seams welded and shot blasted. While in the process of powder coating, I ordered poly urethane control are bushing and transmission mount bushings. And it got a ADDCO 1” front sway bar. The engine mounts are also poly urethane.
I have two engines. The one in the car had 80,000 miles with a busted cam timing chain. I tore the engine down, rebuilt the cylinder head with a 4 angle valve job, new stem seals, replaced any bent valves, new timing and gaskets, and a new piston, ring set, bearing set and ARP head studs. The other engine got stripped down, cleaned, and thoroughly inspected. The block is STD bore and either needs a hone or a perfect block for Darton Sleeves, and also has ARP main studs. I took it upon myself to finish what GM started with the counterweights and did a full polish and knife edge. This will cut down on oil splash and hopefully will cut down on oil temps. Plus it freed up some rotating weight, it just needs to be balanced. I coated it with Conklin Rust Aside to keep it from rusting up. I picked up a set of Eagle H beam rods from a buddy of mine, but never installed them. The oil holes got chamfered and the journals have been micro polished at STD/STD. I also have Clevite “H” race rod bearings and GM main bearings, both STD for the crank. From mild steel, I had a guy make me a set of neutral balance shafts as well.
The turbo setup was a custom deal, starting with a Garrett knockoff hybrid T3/T4 turbo, .74 A/R cold side and .64 A/R hot side. Then I added a cast iron T3 turbo manifold with the provision for an external wastegate, which came in handy considering the turbo does not have one on it. I picked up a Wyntonm 38MM wastegate and adjustable boost controller. The blow off valve is a cheap Ebay one, and I don’t know if it works, but came with a cast aluminum 2.5” housing for easy installation. The 2.5” intercooler piping and front mount intercooler came from CX Racing. The pipe kit came with 16 T bolt clamps, 8 blue silicone couplers, and 8 pieces of pipe. I cut the pipe custom to snake around the backside of the engine around the oil pan to the passenger’s side of the intercooler, then from the driver’s side through the hole in the body straight to the throttle body. I also have a 3” mandrel bent pipe kit from Colombia River and a 3” flex pipe from CX Racing to go along with the turbo kit if you’re interested.
I’m moving on to bigger projects and need this gone. I lost interest in finishing it and just want to get into a different project. I will sell the car as a whole turnkey setup for $2500 turbocharged or $1500 naturally aspirated. Or the prices listed are what I’d like to get for everything parted out.

May be interested in the control arms here shortly...how much to ship to 21666? too bad that subframe is so heavy and big.

The control arms were sold last week, with the suspension. That and so everyone knows, I'm going to keep the sub frame and sway bar. All I really have to sell is the body parts, lights, and the remainder of the turbo kit. Wastegate, BOV, intercooler, intercooler pipe, and the Buick Regal T-Type Short Ram with Filter. Oh, plus the engine and transmission. And the shell will be getting scrapped soon, just gotta get the body parts stripped from it and away it goes.

I am interested in the AEM CAI if you can verify it for sure has a CARB number on it. Also, if it does, where would I get a filter for it?
Re: 2001 Cavy part out!
Saturday, January 14, 2012 7:49 AM
You can use just about any filter...Fujita, Injen, K&N, Spectra, even a cheap EBAY knockoff will work, just has to be a 2.75" inlet. Unfortunately it does NOT have a CARB number on it....I'm guessing you live in CA, huh?

Ya. I didn't pass because my K&N doesn't have a carb number, and neither does any of my exhaust pieces.

Well, I did a complete inventory of the turbo kit. Here's everything I have:

1 Turbocharger-.70A/R cold-.64A/R hot, T3/T4
1 38MM Waste gate with dump tube
1 Blow off Valve with 2.5" adapter
1 FMIC-core measures 27"X3"X2.5" in/out
2 3" Hose clamps
1 4" to 3.5" silicone reducer-on turbo inlet
1 2.75" to 2.5" silicone reducer-blue
1 90 degree 2.5" silicone coupler-blue
2 45 degree 2.5" silicone couplers-blue
6 straight 2.5" silicone couplers-blue
19 2.5" stainless steel T-Bolt clamps
1 straight aluminum 2.5" pipe-powder coated black
4 90 degree mandrel bent aluminum 2.5" pipes-powder coated black
2 45 degree mandrel bent aluminum 2.5" pipes-powder coated black
1 3" mandrel bent short ram intake-fits Buick Regal T-Type-comes with filter
1 3.5" 45 degree silicone coupler-blue
1 straight and 1 90 degree mandrel bent 3.5" aluminum pipe

The intercooler pipe and 3.5" pipe were all custom cut to fit from the turbo to the intercooler to the intake, and the 3.5" was the intake for the turbo inlet.

I also still have the following:

AEM CAI, just aluminum pipe, no filter-$35
1pr. Sunfire SE/GT side skirts, fair shape-$35
1 Getrag F23 Differential, nothing wrong with it and nothing modded on it-$45
Misc Ecotec Engine parts: cam covers, timing cover w/oil pump -$25

2000+ Passenger's Fender, no rust or damage-$45
17” Drag DR-14 wheels with tires, one tire needs a valve stem, and the tires are the wrong size for a Cavy-$300
2003+ Base Rear Bumper Cover-$35
