2.3 engine wanted
Sunday, January 18, 2009 10:29 AM
hey guys I'm wonderng if anyone has a complete ready to run 2.3 dohc or 2.4 engine with wire harness and ecu. I would prefer the 2.3L. And when i say complete i mean all parts on and in working condition to the point a person could run it on a stand. I am not looking for a tranny. And I am not putting this in a car but it would be nice to get the motor mounts too. Please let me know if anyone has anything local. (well within 5 hours driving distance of duluth) thanks

Why would you prefer the 2.3 over the 2.4? The LD9 had less problems and was easier to mod than the 2.3!!!

The 2.3L heads were junk, well, maybe before 93. When GM started putting the 2.3L in FWD cars, everytime someone overheated them, I saw nothing but cracked heads. Don't remember which casting number, but IMPO I'd rather build an LD9! Personally, I'd rather build an L61, but no one would listen anyway.

Good thing that TAC\SI says to run a cooler thermo and Prom to keep the heat cycle down.

And to say 2.3's had cracked head problems... there are a number of 2.3's... all being different engines. IMO the OHC "Quad" gave them all the bad name.

Strange though, in my own experience, the econo's are junk, 3 years, 8 motors.

every motor has their issues. 2.4l= # 3 rod bearing. varies through out the years, seen them happen in all the years.

chris- i remember jake(killerquad), randy wynn(turbo 2.3), cookie monster( ask brian about the head swap in a parking lot) all had head issues. But they were running alot more HP , even my sister in laws grand am with the 2.3 had issues with the head, but that got fixed years ago and car is still running (suprises me).

ecotecs- heard of a few gone bad. seeing in how many that are out there you dont hear about them much. There was a batch of bad ones and if your VIN fit some #"s you got a new motor . Only bad thing i heard about them though.

I would try calling some local junkyards and see what they can come up with for a motor.

Good luck.

As Jake said, every engine has its problems.

2.3's had the head crack, as Chris said, mostly due to over heating........ BUT could also be caused by decking the head (as in some of the High Performance aps we've seen) and there are so many casting changes for the head (the head bolts are rather short as well, and may not provide enough torq to keep the head from shifting)

2.4's had the rod bearing failure, but MANY of them could be attributed to POOR OWNER MAINTENANCE. Its a no brainer, engine oil gets low, rod throws a bearing. The Balance shafts displace a LOT of oil in the pan, and the pump/pickup design could also be part of the problem (hence the 2.3 pump swap). For some reason some years seem to be more prone to it then others.

EcoTec...... I'm sure Chris could work his magic and post up the most common failures (timing chain, oil pump, cylinder sleeves..........)
