Watch for Cops.

Well got pulled over today, claimed my muffler was Ileagal although it a lot quieter then most says and muffler thats not factory spefacations is illegal, also said I have to change my front blinker lights just the bulbs and even my tinted licence plate covers which are not very tinted at all and i bought at Canadain Tire. just pissed cuz the muffler was put on yesturday and if he is pulling me over for mine then he will be pulling over like 1000 cars a day based on that alone.

he also checked my ride height and in my engine bay

as far as i know, u don't have to show cops your engine bay if u don't want to...only specialists from the MTO can do a real check on them...i could be wrong tho

HTA Useful Notes.

http://www.torontocivics.com/tccforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14

Print it out and keep it in your car... it is always good to know your rights under the law rather then 'speculate' what the cops can or can not do.

...and yes, spring time is upon us and with that PEEL, YORK, and MTO crack downs on car modifications...

Enjoy.

...and that's why I went back to stock ride height, no body mods, big resonator and an oval Magnaflow tucked up behind the back bumper with just a small round stainless tip poking out. If they see a low ride height, body mods/graphics, a big fart can muffler hanging out the back, it catches their attention - maybe it isn't right or fair, but that's the game and ultimately you can't win if they decide to harrass you. All my mods from now on are things you can't see, nothing cosmetic to keep cops, thieves and insurance away from my car. You see my car, it looks like any other 4dr Cavalier, except for shaved body and 2002 Z24 wheels.

Yea my car is really not bad though, sportlines which dont lower the car by that much and my exhaust is finished off be a dynomax muffler with a chrome tip that looks pretty much like stock..the only thing that my car is not good for is the blinker light which I want to change anyways so its no big deal, but my plates are not that tinted and you can still see the number perfectly fine. oh well there just plate covers, so il change them and the blinker bulbs but the muffler is staying on.

it really just depends which cop you get and how his/her day has been going... if they are bored... or if they feel like being a dick and pissing people off...

if it was me, i wouldnt change a thing... if its borderline legal... ie: plate covers... or something... screw them... so many cars come stock with them from the dealer.. thats just a jerk cash grab they pull...

as for gettin pulled over by a cop.... he can't check over ur car ...but he can keep u their n call in MTO n wait there with u until ur car is checked over on the spot, n they'll issue u tickets or tow ur car. Happened to a buddy of mine !! but all in all no cop cares about the way ur car is... half the cops out there own done up rides .... its just all to make extra cash

Apprenlty plate covers can go on the front, but not on the back, they are illegal otherwise... As well as blinker lights, they specify in the highway traffic act specific's about them. Also tinted windows are getting cracked down on hardcore. They claim its too restrictive for your view, but its really only for the officer's saftey. When they pull you over, they don't want someone holding a gun on the other side of a black window.

Simple ways to avoid ripping of a hundred or more dollars worth of tint. During day time stops, if your alone in the car, tinted windows, roll the driver's window all the way down... and place both hands on the wheel at 10 and 2. Leave them thier until the officer speaks to you, at that time it is ok to grab your insurance and license. He will probally thank you for that. If there is two ppl in the front seats, just have the passenger roll down his window all the way and place both hands plams up on their lap strecthed out by there knees. Especially during nite stops when there are two officers in the car, they will walk up both sides of the car, and interrogate both occupants. So having your windows all the way down upon being stoped and having your hands in clear view, the officer, unless he's being a dink.. Will probally not ask about window tint.

very good advice.... for your own safety too... no need to scare the cops reaching for your wallet .. get a bullet in the ass...

but i am pretty sure you are mistaken about the plate coveres...a friend of mine got pulled over and she was told that she has to get rid of the front. but the rear is fine..

is that plate covers in general or tinted ones, like there are clear ones too but still wtf. even with my SLIGHTLY tinted ones you can still see the plate perfectly fine so there is no reason for them to be dicks......not to mention my mom and dad have neen driving around witht the same ones on the cars for god knows how long and i have had mine on for over a year and this was the first comment.

he pulled me over cuz of my age and started finding things wrong with the car, even things that are not illeagal cuz he is an ignorant prick, like i said above i know my lights were illeagal so i will change them but for him to say that any muffler you put on your car that is not from the factory specifiation makes it ileagal....he just makes himself look like a dumbass

Well, im not sure, but there is no specifications about darkness of the cover, so i think its ALL covers which cause reflections and problems with viewing them.. but thats i guess up to the cop...

as for mufflers... I think....technicaly ours are ilegal because they are concidered "straight threw" or something which is stated to be against the law, along with "cut outs" or something else... but usualy cops dont care as much unless its one of those horrificly loud ones, or he loves picking on moded cars.. for me, its not really big, and its not really hidden.. but you just stay under 2000 rpms or even in neutral if you can while near cops, and they usualy leave you alone.. another claim lots of cops make are "noise" regulations.. although i dont think there is any exact specifications.. just up to the cops.. although some of those bikes and choppers are INSANE... they hurt your ears in you car with the windows up.... so again, its up to the cop...

the stupid thing about our laws are they are wide open.. "if the police person feels....."
so we are pretty much screwed... your best bet is that the cop doesnt show up to court... and if so, hopefuly the judge lets you off if you bring pics of the plate covers off...

They still those plate covers AT THE MTO OFFICE!!!

Makes sense eh?

Anyway, Hamilton cops got me on King W the other day doing 86 in a 60.....

Ya I thought it was no front, and one on the back, or vise versa.. Couldn't remember which, but I knew it was one or the other.. I hate all plate covers but I knew one or the other was aloud.

Ya, I hate when you break the law and get in trouble for doin so. It really pisses me off too.

Anyways for people who actually believe they haven't done anythin wrong, or think they MIGHT have a chance to fight it... If what your ticket contains is in here. And the cops are right.. your @!#$ outta luck. But if the cop was being a @!#$, and this document doesn't have what the cop thought was good enough for a ticket.. Simply go to court... Most modded car tickets will fall under section VI. But some other sections might be of help depending on your ticket, or the officers grounds...

The FIRST thing you should do is ask the officer to present proof that he holds a Critical Inspection Certificate before allowing him to carry out any inspection for critical defects on your vehicle - this is stated in Section 1 of the Regulations for the HTA.

Whats the 'legal' limit on ride height?

I have clear plate covers because I'm not gonna ruin perfectly good personalized plates. Don't plan on replacing my exhaust anymore, its not worth the trouble.

Re: Watch for Cops.

If your car isn't scraping or touchin the gounr while driving, your fine. If they try to tell you its two finger width's or something stupid. Ask him where in the HTA it states that. It also doesn't mention anything bout cut coils either. And air suspension isn't mentioned, only air cushioned vechiles... Which is a hovercraft, or hovercraft like device.

Also when you are asked to turn your wheels side to side, the can touch the fenders. They shouldn't but if they do, the critial defects part in the books mentions they have to be STRAIGHT and not touching anything. Your car will be towed if it is deemed critically defective. The HTA regulation pertaining to suspension and impoundment of vehicles states that the officer can only tow your car away for being too low IF AND ONLY IF your car, while in a stopped position with wheels straight, is touching any part of the vehicle (as stated in regulation 512/97). Anything pertaining to suspension and impoundment of vehicles must fall under section 82.1 of the HTA.

The violation you are making if true, is contrary to this section in the HTA:

84. (1) No person shall drive or operate or permit the driving or operation upon a highway of a vehicle, a street car or vehicles that in combination are in such a dangerous or unsafe condition as to endanger any person. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 84.

Vehicle with critical defect deemed unsafe

So basically when they ask you to turn the wheels side to side to make sure they clear the fenders, IF they touch the fenders, they still can't impound it, but the vechile must be re-inspected and brought up to par. However they way a suspension system is designed, unless your wheels are really wide, or the wrong offset, the should never touch the fenders anyways.... My buddy has full turning ability with his bagged and bodydropped S-10. With the rocker panels on the ground, he can turn competely each way. With 20 inch wheels and tires.

all good adivse when ever i got pulled over i just roll down the windows put both my hands onthe top of the wheel and inform the cop when i move my haqnde and where ther are going (to grab my licence and reg) brown kid tinted car in scarborough cops dont like, the ride hight thing is true as long as you do no damage the roadway or highway you are fine, the finger thing is there opinion but just look at some stock bmw's and then ask them the same question , in terms of your turn signals what was wrong as long as the glow is white or amber the complies with reg of the hta the colour of the bulb when off does not matter as most after market is blue

Confusing but sorted out.... but he's right I do mostly do it to piss people off. But sometimes, or at least usually no one got into it. Now ppl are starting to play along... Its more fun that way.

i have a feeling we are gonna have another locked thread

in all honnesty dwn... i dont wanna start anything... why is it that you are on a site giving advice about cars you claim to hate and make fun of regularly.... just curious why you waste your time with us losers with our peice of @!#$ cars...

and another thing is, why is it better to drive a civic or some import POS then a fire and cavi which is a domestic POS moding a civic isnt moding anymore, its shopping.... you go to one store with a cart... you buy your fart can, your euro tails and lowering springs... and your done... it takes SERIOUS money to get a civic to be original... since fires and cavi's dont have as many aftermarket parts, people are building their own and customizing. better then buying off the shelf..

frankly, the reason i have a fire is cause it was given to me by my sister and instead of driving a stock fire (which i dont wanna do ) i took that free car and turned it into something i want to drive and something i can be proud of... maybe thats the same reason your drive that truck, which im sure hundreds of people rip on you for driving a truck.

so, the point is.... if you dont like the people and the cars... why do you come on here so much?
