Gas $$$$$$$$

How much are people spending on gas? I filled up the cav yesterday for 99.9 and to day it's 124.4 what the heck? Time to buy a siphon, people have been driving off without paying. I guess it's the goverments way of saying happy labour day.

Got this in an email... I know it's just a stupid forward and nothing will likely come of it... but what the hell. How hard is it to just not buy gas for a day?

Quote:

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF
OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL
COMPANIES.

THEREFORE SEPTEMBER 1st HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT UP THEIR BEHIND " DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THESE TWO NATIONS SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY
PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WAITING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?

REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT
THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING
COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON
EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING
MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY,
WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE SEPTEMBER 1ST A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

As nice as it would be to be able to "stick it to the man", boycotting for one day wouldn't make much of a difference. Imagine everyone boycotting for one day.. they now make no money for that day. But the following day, everyone will be headed to the pumps because they didn't go the day before.

Now the oil company makes twice as much the following day. Plus they get the added benefit of using the statistic of low numbers at the pumps to raise the prices higher.

To be effective, one (or two) companies needs to be targetted and "attacked" for atleast a month. After a month of no sales, a company is going to have to do something to attract customers. This would usually spark a price war.

We need to make them fight against each other and compete for the lower price. Right now they are collectively "screwing us"

its not the gas companies fault, its all supply and demand, if they started pumping out more gas then gas would be lower since the supply would meet the demand levels. If the demand goes down as it did in 1980, close 2$/litre, then gas prices will drop because they will have alot more supply. We saw a steep drop in gas prices during that time because cars like our beloved j-bodies came out and there was a market for them instead of those big V8 cars. Now we got the same problem with SUVs. There will come a point where ppl will be fed up and they will trade them in for smaller cars then we will see lower prices. In Amsterdam ppl pay 6$ US a gallon for gas and in Caracas Venezuela ppl pay 0.12$ US a gallon thats because they supply their own oil. The govt here should remove some of the taxes to ease the price a bit, they can't put a cap on it because there would be a shortage. But Martin (tax and spend) refuses to remove the tax. If we didn't have any tax we'd be paying around 50cents/ litre.

We should do something about this, but remember guys ppl are dying down there from Katrina. So just hold on for a bit, OPEC will release more oil into the market to compensate for the lose.

Also hybrids are not worth it, you have to pay more than 30k for a hybrid, either a Prius or a Civic. At this price you can get a nice used gas car (ex. Cavalier) for 10k with a 20-30k km on it. I don't think you'll spend 20k+ on gas in the next 5-10yrs you own it. The parts are really expensive for them too.

and if there was no tax we wouldnt have the kind of social programs we have today....ie, health care, education and all the other crap canadians love to complain about

suck it up, its here to stay until either demand goes down (which it wont globally due to Asia) or until we have more refining capacity (which wont be until 2007-09)

I know they don't control the price just the crazy amount of tax. They are taking advantage of the situation in the states, with the price surge. Next week the prices of food is going up along with everything else, so every things going to go down the @!#$ter.

Theres not much that we can do but get another job to pay for gas. I feel bad for all the people commuting, that must really hurt the wallet.

The problem with trying to organize a month-long boycott is that people will immediately flock back to the boycotted company as soon as their price is 2 cents less than the station across the street.

As a collective, society is a bunch of idiots.

The governments tax is 14 cents per liter it does NOT go up when the price does it is always the same..........the oil companys are the only ones that raise and lower the price

I hope I'm wrong, but I bet you'll never see gas sell below $1 per liter ever again.

That's not true.

There are several components to the gas taxes. That 14 cents may be one component of it but there are certainly others that are based on a percentage of the price, GST being among them.

I agree that because of our stupid need for hummers and stuff is causing our problems... This summer i think i have filled up like max 5 times in 4 months... i am fortunate enough to occasionally have use of one of 2 other family cars when i really need to (or i will drive my own) but I am biking almost everywhere now.. it is healthy and saves tons on gas these days.

Quote:

The part said about hybrid's i think isn't accurate... I used to hate hybrids... such ugly little cars.. i used to ask why they couldn't make a NICE hybrid car. well i recently saw the new Lexus RX400h (hybrid).. it looks exactly like the original SUV if not better.. and in fact has MORE hp then the original.. We are getting into the future of hybrids where we can have the same cars we drive now, just better for gas. as was said tho, they cost a bit more.. the Hybrid cost about 10 grand more.. and like all things prices will go down as the technology comes along.. but for an extra 10 grand to save you crazy amounts at the pumps is worth it (we all know how much each tank for an SUV cost)... along with stopping less to fill up and im sure there are tax credits for driving these cars..

the prices are outrageous and people are saying its because of the hurricane... its possible that could have something to do with it.. but it is the stock market who sets the price of oil. If there is little supply (like others said) it shows on the market which translates to higher prices. I heard this on the radio or tv. also the person was saying, the second a spike in the market, the prices will change.. but if it goes down, it takes a day to give us a break.

it would be amazing if the government helped by lowering the taxes on gas for a bit... they were supposed to lower them before, till that lying SOB mguinty decided to "use it". all in all our government doesn't care about us, as long as they get their kick backs...

your right, no tax isn't an option these days.... but thanks again to mcguinty, we now have LESS heath care and have to pay MORE money and don't get me started on how bad our education is .. and the gas tax they claim goes to fixing the roads and buses... i still see most roads in shambles..

"In Amsterdam ppl pay 6$ US a gallon for gas and in Caracas Venezuela ppl pay 0.12$ US a gallon thats because they supply their own oil."

Well, if we followed that model, why the hell are we paying so much, when we produce a huge amount of oil in Alberta?
Re: Gas $$$$$$$$
Sunday, September 04, 2005 10:33 AM
we don't produce a huge amount of oil in alberta, in fact very small compared to other countires

however if we could find a cheaper way to refine the oilsands, we would be a major player

pretty much Alberta only gets the outcome of their oil production.. they have no PST because of it.. and from what i hear (i could be wrong) a lot if not all of their oil goes to the states to be refined into gasoline and sold back to us... i may be wrong.. i think i heard that somewhere.. if im mistaken, im sorry.. but i do know they are the only province that gets the bennifits of their oil.
