I'm surprised it lasted that long! They usually go around 60k or so.

Probably just waiting for the weather to start to cool down before it started to complain to you.

Pick up a new one and some beer and come on by and I'll show you how to swap it out.

I had a feeling you'd answer.
now before I go out and buy a new one, can you tell me what it is that I'm buying? haha I really have no idea.
And this time I will actually come in cloting that I can get dirty in! haha
Thanks Kev, you're awsome!

1999 Cavalier L4 146 2.4L Fl N (VIN T)
Belt
W a/c Part# 5050475
Belt Tensioner
Part # 89290

hope that helps

Probably don't need the tensioner.

I think the belt is less than $20 at Canadian Tire.

And I'm drinking Lakeport Honey now so the beer will be cheap too.

Are you available this Sunday to do it? The squealing noise is humiliating when driving around town.

Might not be the belt, may be an accessory that's driven by the belt. Alternator, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, even a/c. Find your actual problem before throwing parts at it.

If its a belt that has to be changed soon anyways Id ratehr get it out of the way. But it coudl be something else for sure. I have no idea. Me and engines.... haha We'll try this and hope for the best!
My question is, is it safe to be driving it? or is it going to snap? I've been driving it liek a grandma since I realized its somethign under the hood (I thought it was tire pressure or something). But its been there for about 800km. Maybe a little less.
And ya its embarrassing. You see a nice car, and then you hear it as it gets closer, not the look I'm going for so much.

Kev, Sunday soudsn good, I will probably be half asleep though because I'm pulling an all nighter Saturday, but I'm sure I can make it out and do it up. I'll give you a call in the next couple of days to finalize. I have Thursday off and Saturday before 5pm as well if one of those are better. Whatever beer you want buddy.

What belt am I asking for? Like whats the name? Passat, those numbers are wicked, but I think I'm goign to hit Canadian tire, unless the dealership ones are better quality and last longer. BTW, I have A/C

Mikey, call me bro

heh. Yep. I really like the stuff. I still drink Keith's when it's on tap but the Honey is good in bottles!

Matt...

We can definitely do it tomorrow night if that's better for you. Saturday's out though. Already too much going on then so it would have to be in the morning and that would suck.

As for the belt quality... it's really up to you whether you want to spend extra to get a Delco or Goodyear belt. I bought the cheap Crappy Tire one when I replaced mine since I was only going to use it for a few months. It's gonna last you the next 4 years or so regardless, so it's up to you whether you want to spend extra.

It's really not likely to break. Does it squeal all the time or only when you slow down and stop at a light or something? If it's squealing all the time then Bill's right and it may be something besides the belt. If it just squeals when it's cold and at low rpm's though, then it's almost certainly the belt. And as you said... it should be changed anyway.

You're asking for a serpentine belt for a 99 Cavalier with a 2.4L with A/C.

Mike, you're more than welcome to come along. Once we're done, you'll both know how to do change them in the future.

If we're doing this tomorrow though, let me know today so I can try and pick up the tool for it from crappy tire. We can do it without it, but it makes it easier and is free to borrow.

Chirping? Should really be a squealing. Does it go away when the car warms up a bit? Or, back when it started, did it go away when the car warmed up?

I don't mind at all if Vince comes by.

its squeeling, but it almost sounds liek a chirp. It goes away as I go faster. I think it used to go away when it warmed up, but not anymore. Now its just annoying.
And I tried turning on the a/c and it dosent go away. W'll see what happens after Sunday

All the signs of a dead belt.

Curiously, Crappy Tire no longer lends out serpentine belt tools so we're doing this old-skool style with the regular wrenches.

The one I borrowed from them when I did my blower install was a piece of crap. Now I have a Blue Point tensioner tool, and wow does it make it nice and easy! Damn thing was expensive though, sheesh, damn Snap On Tools!

Sorry but for some reason I found this question hilarious (probably because I'm tired).
I bet it sounds like: SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Every now and then I'll bid on one of those on eBay. Excellent tool and I'd love to have one! Craig let me borrow the one from RSM when we did my blower and it was a godsend!

Without the blower though, it's easy enough to do them with a regular wrench and even moreso when you've got a straight-handled flare-nut wrench.

Some day I'll get my Blue Point...

All said and done, the belt is replaced, it was the problem, and Kevin is the man!
