ran out of gas, now car idling like crap
Thursday, August 04, 2005 7:57 AM
hey guys,

car ran out of gas the other day, now it idles like crap, really bumpy. it's probably because there was some crud in the bottom of my tank when it ran out and it got sucked in to the engine

should i run some injector cleaner thru it? or would seafoam be better?

if for seafoam, can someone tell me where to get it? i went to canadian tire to look for it, but couldn't find any. when i asked a couple guys there if they had it, they just looked at me like i was retarded.

The chances of that "crud" actually getting ino your engine are really slim. The pump has a sock on the end, plus the fuel filter itself, and then the injector screens.

Well if it actually gets into the engine, that would be best since it would be burned and spit out. The problem is when something out of the ordinary gets caught in the filter or the injectors.

Definitely run some fuel injector cleaner through it. It won't hurt anything and may solve the issue. If it doesn't... well it'll only cost a few bucks to try it.

fuel pump or filter. I would try the filter first...

When the gas tank is empty. That's usually how one would run out of gas.

Really? I think this is what happened to me just recently.. because I got about 235kms on like $10 of gas and then the car just died on the road. I put some fuel in and found that the pump was, in fact, dead. My fuel gauge is also screwed, because it said I had a quarter tank at the time of the car dying, when I was pretty sure it was empty, and the trip meter was running close to 235 or so... I was heading to the gas station at the time as well, hehe. My "check gauges" light or whatever didn't come on either.

I thought that the pump, on finding there's nothing to pump, had a sensor that would shut it off so it wouldn't burn itself out.

Anywho, it should be fun to replace the fuel pump. Woohoo..

Ah, the 3rd gen pump will shut off after a couple of seconds if the engine's not running. I tested this last night..(the current to the terminal cuts out) so the pump won't burn out if it's not getting fuel.

Also, by the looks of the tank on the inside and the filter too, you won't get any contaminents into your fuel lines. There's also the filter thing where the pump inlet is.

thanks guys - rough idle is gone now after changing out the fuel filter

another quick one for you - any idea how much to fix a bad fuel sensor and how much labour is involved? I ran out of gas because of a bad fuel sensor

sounds like it much be a shatload of work, but not sure really
