FL peps. how do you guys do it w/ these hurricanes

Searously.....

I live in Michigan, but in all reality. How the hell do you guys stand to live down there. It would seem as if it rained constantly. With the now 6 Hurricanes that have developed over the Altantic.

What do you do with your cars? Aren't you afraid of winds ripping your house up, or dropping a tree on your car.

Guess I would much rather have snow in the winter and drive a different car during that time. and then rock n roll in my car over the summer. Than have hurricanes during the peak season.

Just my thoughts. Im curious about this....let me know...

Well.....I live in the town that Hurricane Charley last year...right in Port Charlotte..........I seriously would never leave here because of the hurricanes......I have opposite feelings as you do...like I could never live up where it gets so cold in the winter and such lol......................When a hurricane comes up all I do is take my car to my neighbors garage and cram that and my jet ski in the garage......I don't really worry about it cause if somethings gonna happen to it then so be it.........

Yeah man, I'd take a season full of hurricanes over snow, no doubt. Here's a hurricane in a nutshell: a few hours of strong gusts of wind and rain, usually lasts a day, but then its gone. I'd equate it to an annoying relative coming over for dinner. You are probably basing your perception on only the bad stuff that is worth making the news. I live in Tampa, and we fortunately only got a good amount of one of the hurricanes last year (Frances I think), and some of Ivan too and it wasn't all that bad. What you see on TV is mainly mobile home parks that get completely leveled because they are mobile homes or trailors. The worse part about them is if your power goes out for an extended period of time, that can suck.

As far as cars, yes I'd be worried if I didn't have a place to stash it, but if you got a garage you're golden.

But honestly, I agree with Bobby, I think the opposite. There's no way I'd ever want to live in snow for months on end. Its nice to visit every once in a while, but I'll stick with the heat and sunny beaches.

I'll have to agree with everyone else about taking hurricanes over snow.....sure it can get messy, power outtages, trees all over the place...but if you have a garage and a generator then youre set! We just got one of those generators that permanently hook up to the house and automatically kick in once the power goes out, so we should be alright.

As said above, not a big deal. Life is too short to worry about it, but they give us plenty of warning, so we can get out of town if need be. Or store it.

During one of the hurricanes last year we lost power for like 9-10 days straight. The storm wasn't a problem, it was not having electricity. Still better than dealing with blizzards IMO.

i've lived in both blizzards and huricances either way your @!#$ so you just get used to in and make the best of things, besides thats why we pay insurance, i'd like to think they acutually have to due something productive with the money besides screw people over and horde it for themselves

I'm with Zach the power outage is worse than the storm itself most of the time, I have been lucky enough that in ten years I have only been sideswiped allot but never a direct hit. ( not like its a pin point storm ) I lived in the land of ice and snow for most of my life, you just get used to it. Just think like a Boy Scout, "Be Prepared", stock up early, always keep gas in the car, and water at the house. plenty of food for the pets and yourself.

I also agree with the power outage being worse.....I think it was 15 days before we got power back.....It sucked sleeping with the window open and hearin all the damn generators running and trying to sleep in 80 degree air is tough......but we made the best of it...

yeah but the good part was that I went to bed earlier and was more rested, not spending all my time on the computer, or watching TV and I got up earlier to avoid the heat. The pool and going to work were actually good places to stay cool.

I've lived in the Tampa Bay area all my life, I love Florida Sure it gets hot & rains irradically, and then just the past year we've been getting heavy hurricanes.. they say it's going to be the norm from now on, who knows :\ if you dont live in a mobile home, trailer or on the beach.. you wont have as many problems, I mean.. a good size hurricane can still total your house on land (not beach front) but its not as easy.. anywho, I <3 florida.. even with the hurricanes

John- Yeah I guess you are right. I've never experienced a hurricane before, so I would have no idea how long it lasted and so on, but from what you say its not that bad. I can understands your feelings about annoying relatives. The TV thing is very true, journalists and tv stations only show the searous @!#$ that happened, and make it seem like its bad bad crazy @!#$y weather, and you'll die and all this...blah blah..seems kinda bias to me. They should show the other side of the story, so us Michiganders (myself) can and will stop being so ignorant about hurricanes and their power.

I can understand everyones feelings about the power outages there, and im sure we've all been through them. But Zach, 9-10 days is nuts!!!1

Cinny - Are you an eagle scout? Just curious, I earned my Eagle a few years back.

Hell yeah! I <3 BEER

Anyways, I guess im just ignorant about hurricanes because I have never experienced that first hand like you all have.

Thanks for all the imput.

Anyone else have a different story? Im still curious.

goot moose?>>> did you get one of those natural gas powered generators (the ones where they put an underground tank in your yard)? We looked into one, but according to the guy it would only power the house for a few days which didn't seem like it would be worth it considering we lost power for 13 days or more during each hurricane last year. We just have a gas powered generator.

The media makes an extended effort to make stories seem worse than they are. A few years ago, when there were a high number of shark bites off Volusia county (higher than average), the meida from all over the country was there calling it "the summer of the shark." They basically scared the crap out of tourists for a bunch of little sharks that were swimming close to shore and occasionally nibbling on a foot (a few stitches and you're fine types of things). They made some big dramatic story out of an otherwise common occurance.

No power is the worse part... and the second worse part is not knowing what the hell is going on outside of Florida. After a hurricane every damn channel is focusing on Florida, and there is no mention of any other news stores from across the country and globe.

Yah ours is powered by natural gas but we dont have an underground tank, the city has some special hurricane proof natural gas supply or something i don't know but we're hooked up to that. It doesn't run the whole house though, like it wouldnt be able to handle the energy demand on our air conditioning system, but powers things as lights, refrigerators, and stuff like that not exactly sure though. I want to test it out tho haha!

So, your city has natural gas lines? I guess that would make more sense. We don't have lines so it we'd have to put in our own tank which when filled could only power the house for about 3 days. To put the tank in the ground and hook it all up was like $20,000, so we said @!#$ it. Our gas generator worked well enough last year, the only problem was finding gas (which was more of an annoyance than an actual problem).

im to lazy to read it all, but i read a few and i feel the same exact way... hurricanes arent bad if u prepare.. its the idiots u see on the news not the smart people, not once has there been more than $350 worth of damage done to any of my property (350 for chopping up an old tree that fell over) and my car was outside for all of the other hurricanes... and hurricanes last for 1 MAYBE 2 days.. during the winter every day is PERFECT.. 70 degreese light breeze no humidity... oh god its so awesome down here in florida you dont even understand lol

FLA > the other 49

If you are prepared not problem. One day of Hurricane in comparison to couple months of storms and not being able to drive. I see people up north putting their cars away for about 3-4 months. Most of the problem were with trailer parks. If you live in one then you have a need to worry. We hardly had a trouble were i was. We had no electricity for 2 days and that was it. Can't compare last year to previous years. you can go a couple years with out a hurricane but you can't go with out snow season.

Thats the attitude that I like. With this mentality there is a better chance of people from the north to NOT move here to Fl. The past 5-10 years this state has become horribly over populated. A drive that I used to take on avg 20 min now takes me 50-55 mins.
Yep... we need more 'canes here.

eck.... 16 days i think it was for the first one then like 3 for the second.... fpl is bitching about all the money they had to spend but if they just went through and started moving powerlines underground theyd not have to spend the money(along with stopping most of the hurricane related deaths[downed powerlines]), if it was 200billion to do it for all of south florida that would be a deal since these hurricanes are supposed to be increasing before decreasing over the next 20 years and didnt they spend like 14 billion or something like that on emergency repairs and stuff(their entire emergency fund)..... how bright the people that run florida are*dripping with sarcasm*....
