Track Day Adventures at ATCO
Monday, February 14, 2005 3:16 PM
Alright, so the other night me and Peej slept over Rich's house in Bordentown (for those of you who don't know, Rich is one of our good friends from the Jersey J's car club, who owns his own house and is kind enough to always leave the door open for us). So this morning we all wake up (amazingly, PJ is the first one up) and head to ATCO Raceway. Rich just installed a few new parts on the car that allow us to tweak its state of tune with a laptop, so we're trying to dial some stuff in.

At first, I wasn't going to run my car, because it's had this horrendous noise at low rpms in gear, under load, and i hadn't for the life of me been able to figure out what it was... Sounded like a broken motor mount or something. Well, I said @!#$ it, I'll go, I'll run, and if the noise is a part thats partially broken or about to break, it will break when i launch and at least I'll know what it is. Well, sure enough, three hard runs later, the noise has DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY... WTF?? Lol, I'm not complaining... Although I did say to the guys that I thought the noise must have been the car's way of telling me to stop driving it like an old lady and get it to the track and drive it like it deserves to be driven.

Anyway, there were a buttload of wicked fast cars there... too bad there were more fast cars than there were competent drivers... There was an 11 second street-driven Audi S4, about half a dozen EVO 8's, a Lancer Ralliart (which look incredibly hot in person... I dare say they LOOK better than the EVO, but they're slow), and probably another 6-7 SRT-4's.

Me and Rich ran over to watch some of the EVO's run, and were sorely disappointed. Its sad that the only people with money enough to buy that car couldn't drive it if their lives depended on it. It should be a 13.5 second car at the least with a competent driver. Only two of them were faster than that, the rest were well over 14's... ICK!! It's AWD for christ's sakes, rev that sucker up to 6 grand and @!#$in go!! Its not like you're going to spin FOUR high performance tires.... Arg...

The SRT4's proved to have just as many, if not more incompetent drivers in their ranks. These cars have limited slip differentials and really good tires... I have an open diff, less power, and way @!#$tier tires.... AND I WAS GETTING BETTER SIXTY FOOT TIMES!!! WTF??? I wanted to go up to the one guy and just tell him to turn in his keys cuz he doesn't deserve a car that fast. Then, to make matters worse, we were checking out their cars in staging, and two of them had boost controllers really obviously mounted in the engine compartment.... I don't know why, since the srt4 wastegate is ADJUSTABLE, but regardless, if you can't drive at 14.5 psi, you sure as hell can't drive at anything over that....

THEN there was the female SRT4 driver, who although cute, apparently knew nothing about cars that her boyfriend hadn't told her, and he obviously didn't know much. She was running so inconsistently it boggles the mind. Mind you, and SRT4 should run between a 14.0 and a 14.5 with an average driver. She hadn't broken into 14's all day... 15.5, 16, EWWW what are you doing in that car??? Anyway, we were talking to her, because she was cute and cute girls with fast cars are that much more attractive (not as attractive as girls who can ACTUALLY DRIVE their fast car though). Well, we were giving her advice like the kindhearted gentleman (read: dirty minded perverts hoping to score) we are, and after a while she asks if we're on any forums online. I tell her "Yeah, we're on J-Body.org and VWVortex". So she asks me what i drive and I tell her the beetle over there, and she gives me the standard "awww thats cute... what's it run?" To which i respond 15.5. Then she asks what J-Body is, and I tell her its a cavalier forum, and she now realizes that Rich is the owner of the blue cavalier she had seen earlier. So she chuckles a bit and asks him what it runs. To which Rich replies, "oh, its not that fast, but my best so far is a 14.1". Her jaw hit the asphalt and her eyes got wide enough to mount a set of 18" wheels in the sockets. I wish we had gotten the look on her face on video... PRICELESS. Then she makes a fatal error...

"I thought that car was just some riceboy running 18's" Rich forced a smile even though he wanted to throttle her and proceeded to go back to his car and hook up the juice . SHe should know her engine was designed in collaboration with Mitsubishi, whereas Rich's motor was designed by europeans, making her Dodge more "rice" then his Chevy. Beyond that she had those gay ass APC retro taillights, and nothing is more rice than that.

To make the story even funnier, her next run, she misses second gear... THREE TIMES in the same run, and runs..... an 18.... who's the ricer running 18's now?!

So despite Rich almost blowing a nitrous bottle out the backside of his car when his bottle heater malfunctioned, causing dangerously high pressure levels, which luckily was caught before he made a run, it was a good day. A lot was learned, a good time had by all, and I helped a few fellow Vee-Dubbers out by giving them launch and shift point advice.

Oooo I forgot... My last run of the day, this kid with a new Jetta 1.8T comes up to me, wants to race claiming he doesn't "have anything special". So i'm like, hell i'll run ya, whatever. Well, I smoked him off the line and halfway down the track until he finally caught up (the turbo in those cars is slightly better in the top end than in my car) and passed me. He ran a 15.1 and I had screwed up and run a 15.9. Well, here's the gutbuster... His car was CHIPPED. At least $500 right there and he couldn't even break 14's. Meanwhile, my best time is only 4 tenths slower than him, and i'm running stock boost, stock exhaust, stock turbo.... This just goes to show you that a fast driver is more important than a fast car...

Well, that was our adventure for this week, tune in next week when mandy of the jersey j's comes along to try out her new 04 eco cav. Anyone else who wants to join the fun meet us at ATCO at 10 am.

Damn...I wish I could have gone but I know what times I would have ran. By the way, I'm buying an SAFC tomorrow from my friend and hopefully I can get it tuned and installed if I recieve my tax return this week. I can't wait to hit up Atco after all my work is done....then I'll spank that chick with my right hand in my girl car Sunfire LOL

By the way, good point, a fast driver is more important than a fast car...that's the greatest example right there.

Rodimus, Atco as of right now only opens on sundays.

In fact, its a little sketchy if they'll be open this sunday or not because if the weather isn't good during the week, they won't be able to resurface the track and will end up doing that on sunday if they can't do it during the week, so if you plan on coming , call their hotline after 7 to check and see if they'll be open or not. I don't have the number handy but its on their website which is www.atcorace.com.

Not to sound like an ass but the Srt4 wastegate is not ADJUSTABLE! It is computer controlled and even a boost controller wont help much. You cant really make more boost than stock without some mods to the computer. And in 03 there was no limited slip. In 04 it was an option and in 05 i beleave its finally standard equipment. I have done alot of reading on these cars and eventually will pick one up when my insurance rates start dropping. (Age, being a guy, and Driving record make for high insurance rates)

HAHAHAHAHA Here we go. Dude Jay WORKS FOR DODGE!!!
And LSD or not ANY srt4 03-05 should be able to run consistent 14.5's or better. But I'm not even getting involved in this one.

Goce, hit me up on aim tonight.

Ooh and like jay said I'm very lucky to be typing this right now. To elaborate a bit what happened is the pressure switch the automates the bottle heater got stuck closed, causing the bottle to be continuously heated. Now the track workers decided to take about a 1.5 hour lunch break not even 20 min after i hooked everything up. So the heater got the bottle pretty hot, All i can say is that my pressure gauge that I've never seen go past 1200PSI was PEGGED UP AGAINST THE UNDER SIDE OF THE NEEDLES RESTING PIN!!!!!! My guess the tank saw at least 2000PSI, and the funny thing is that the safety cap that's supposed to blow at a certain pressure never let loose.

So after bleeding about 6lbs of brand new juice into the air ...I got the bottle pressure to around 1400 psi and said F@#* it and ran anyway. Ooh yea i forgot to say that i found out about this little malfunction as i was getting ready to stage, so you can imagine how much i was scrambling to get things straightened out!!!

So i stage, go and as soon as the juice kicks in my EGT gauge goes to over 1600 and my AFR drops to dead lean. Ok, so i get out of it, then back in..... same thing. Now it's time to shift into 2nd, so back out of it shift then on the gas again... bam dead lean but egt's aren't quite as high. Let off for a sec then just mash it and say to myself " whatever happens happens", well she made it down the track in one piece. Now keep in mind that I've just upgraded to a 75 shot, and along with it I have pulled back my timing 2 degrees. But this has proved to me that without a doubt the eco is a very solid platform. If it was even half as weak as I have heard some people complain it would have popped almost instantly. This confirming that the eco dosn't blow from use of nitrous, it blows from inexperienced people using nitrous when they don't enough to do so safely.

(There are a few exceptions that I know of where eco's have blown due to equipment failure and the people who have blown under these circumstances I do have B]alot of respect for, you know who you are )[

OK that was a great story. And you know what normally I don't do Sunday racing but here is the deal. Rich can I sleep over your house after the meet on Saturday? I'll just hit up church on Saturday if I can I'm dying to see what my ECO runs.

The sad part is that you'll run better times than me but that will change...I just got my SAFC and waiting for some cash to get it installed! When everything is all good...then I'll hit up the track with you guys.

Wow, nice to be 17 and know everything... i forgot what it was like to be like that... Um, yeah, if you remove the heatshield that covers the wastegate arm and exhaust manifold, you will see the arm is threaded, and if you dial it the right way even when the gate is "closed" it will remain partially open allowing boost to climb... And yes, it is computer controlled but you can set it all the way up to whatever the overboost limp setting is before it will actually limit the boost. And all of the srt's we've had here at my shop have been LSD, to my knowledge they all have them, we only had a few 04's so maybe they were optional but i'm sure the majority of them were equipped. Regardless, and open diff on one of those things should still be a 14.5 minimum. some of those a-holes were running 15's for god's sakes.

Anyways, i'm still kinda up in the air if i'm going or nt on sunday, i'm supposed to be going to AC with my family for my 21st, so if i can convince them to go late i'll be there. @!#$, its my party and i'll race if i want to lol..

Well, fair warning, so far as a standing quarter goes, I'm right up there with the eco's so far as bolt-on/allmotor is concerned... Its just that damn 3rd and 4th gear that you guys really haul on me.

Yeah, its very iffy as to whether or not i'll be there... if i am i'll probably have to bail at noon/1pm-ish... so assuming we're both gonna stay at richs the night before, we have to make sure we actually get to the track when the gates open.

On another note, if the weather doesn't hold for the rest of this week, they might not even be open on sunday, because they're supposed to be resurfacing the track during the week, but if they haven't done it by sunday they will remain closed that day. We just have to check the hotline before we go.

Oh, and the LSD IS STANDARD on all 04 models... Just remember kid, while you were doing your "reading" i was busy under the hood of them repairing tps wiring ( a common failure since its stretched too tight at the factory) and installing stage 2 upgrades. I've held the wastegate in my hand, thank you... And i know 03 had no limited slip. Next time, check your facts before trying to "not sound like an ass". Missed the mark on that one skippy

Well Jay I'm not going to stay over Rich's. I think it would just be easier to stay at my house and I'll leave early to meet you guys at Rich's. Can we stop off for breakfast at the diner before going to the track? And I know you and I should be farly close in the 1/4 mile. That's why it would just be fun to run a heads up race cause I think you and I would be the closest race if you don't get your mods in before this weekend.

i heard the track was absolutely horrble last sunday (feb 13) my boy who has a 05 GLi 1.8t jetta should be clearly in the 14s and his best was like a 15.2 or something like that. i dunno if he knew how to launch correctly. but his trap speeds were like 93-95 mph and his 60ft were like 2.4-2.5. he said he just kept spinning and would spin going into 2nd and then some.

LOL was it a gray one??? If it is then thats probably the guy i raced. It wasn't the track at all, i was hookin 2.2 sixty foot times on my stock rsa's which are crap. Your friend told me it was his first time at the track, and believe me no one does good their first time. He cut like a 2.5 sixty foot, he just needs to dial in his launch and shift a little faster. His car was nice as hell though.

BTW atco opens 9:30am racing should start at 10am i'm still iffy about being there or not so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah that was pretty much the way it played out with us too... I had him probably til half track and then all that extra power finally saved him. His mistake was chipping the car before mastering it in stock form. It's very hard to go straight into driving a 14 second car, especially front wheel drive and an open diff. He's a cool kid though maybe if i see him there again i'll try and help him out if i can.

On to other news... I just called the hotline and it turns out that

ATCO WILL BE CLOSED THIS SUNDAY FOR TRACK RESURFACING!!!

So i'll see you guys next week, sunday february 27th to help break in the nice new track surface
