Body work
Thursday, March 24, 2005 9:57 AM
Okay so I finally got the money together to finish the exterior and went to a body shop to get an idea of what they want to do the work. I need 8 holes shaved (stock fire spoiler and antenna), body kit needs to be lined up the rest of the way and the car needs to be painted back to black. Does 5000 dollars seem a bit ridiculous? I think so but I want to get some other opinions on this, the body work is not all that much only I have nowhere to do it and have no time anyway. Alot of people recommend this shop but that is a whole lot of money. What do you guys think?

Car needs to be painted back to black? What color is it now? That does sound a little steep to me... but do you have any more info on EXACTLY what is going to be done?

Yeah, $5000 sounds like a lot more than you should be spending for what you said above.

Have a good one,
Justin

seems like they are gonna do a very damn good job for that price. Depends on what you mean by body kit needs to be lined up. It does seem kindof high though but you know that for 5 grand it will be perfect or should be. Do you plan on driving this car every day. Cause if so then why spend 5 grand on paint.

the highest i would go is 3500 for a new paint job...5 is expensive especially if its not a custom color/

First off I do as much as possible with my friends, but I cannot do everything. Right now the car is black, but the bodykit, hood, fenders all are unpainted so I will be painting the entire car fresh, might as well. The kit is already on, but needs some adjusting and skirts need to be attached better than I managed with 3m adhesive. Nothing too major. My stock spoiler left 7 small bolt holes on the trunklid, those need to be shaved, and the antenna needs to be shaved. I figured they were trying to rape me, but having little experience with body work pricing and a lack of shops with good reps willing to do custom work in the area I was advised to go to this particular shop and was boggled when they said $2400 for the body work and $2500 to paint everything when the body work was complete. I certainly thought somewhere in the vicinity of 3 grand give or take but not 5. Just decided to check first in case I was wrong. Thanks

Brother, Dont take this as postjacking or me being an @$$.

If I'm right about where I think you got the qoute from there is more to the story.
you went there before for a quote and changed your mind, and tried to do stuff yourself.
The reason the price may seem high is because now they have to go back and correct a lot of things that werent done right the first time.

^^^ exactly, also keep in mind the $5 grand isn't just for painting the car it's for everything. And they maybe under the impression he does want a show car.
I know the shop. One of the first questions they asked me when I took my car there was if it was going to be a show car or daily driver. It does make a difference to them. I also saw photos of all thier work and thier process as well as actual cars they finished.
I shopped around for a lot of bodyshops before. I came across them when I saw a Honda they did at Woodmoore shopping center. Once I saw this car and then saw the before pics of what it used to look like it was unbelievable. Then I saw how they built it up again after the owner totaled it a second time. Thats how you know what you're paying for, and that youre not getting raped.

Do you want hamburger or do you want steak?
( I love that line..LOL)

Now the paint is where you may be able to cut a bit off the $$$. Depends on exactly what color you wanted, type of paint, etc.
Instead of shaving the holes on your trunk..get a new one from Certi-fit. only about $45. That cuts the labor of welding in the holes.

Let them know exactly how much you have to work with and youre expectations too...so they can work with you.

Good luck man

Good point there...

A really good show quality paint job is going to cost extra money... where it may seem steep to most people... a really good show quality job is going to run you a lot more. Afterall... you do get what you paid for.

Well, I think you know where I was Signal, but there is nothing to really fix. There is a new front bumper and the skirts must be lined up. Josh you have seen my car, it is not $2400 worth of work and I know that now. Last I checked, you could not get a 2003+ sunfire trunklid w/o spoiler attached. That may have changed, but as far as I know there isn't any option but to shave the spoiler. Finally, I could do a nice paint job and a color change for 3 grand, why would I want them to just paint it black. When I get some time I will try to post up some pics of the car and let you see what it looks like. If the weather ever gets decent again. But honestly, even if they do great work, I am finding that I can have great work done w/o paying quite as much as they asked. There is no custom paint going on the car, I just want the same black as it came from the factory, and this price doesn't even include the door jambs and the engine bay. I appreciate the thoughts and Signal you are not an @$$ for letting me know what you think and that is exactly why I put this post in here, to gauge whether my thoughts were right or not. But if they need so much to go back and correct my bodykit, it would be cheaper to just buy a whole new kit and let them start fresh. Josh, give me a call when you get a chance, I have a whole rack of things I could use a hand with when the weather breaks. Thanks again guys

All cool man.

I didnt know if you were getting a color change or custom color at first. But I think they were under the impression you were going for the show car thing.

Good thing is if youre jut sticking to black ,once you get the body work outta the way the rest should be easy I suppose.

Man I should really learn to do bodywork...maybe a career change.
