Hello guys,
I am curious to know if the 1987 cavalier convertible rs with the 2.8 and full equiped was more costly than the z24 with same options.
Many thanks
Alain

According to the Standard Catalog of Chevrolet, the base price of a V6 RS would have been higher than the base price of a Z28, but it doesn't really give an option-by-option price breakdown, so it's hard to say how fair that is. Also, there may have been bits that were RS only or Z28 only (other than badges), so an apples-to-apples comparison may not be practical.

Case in point: When we bought a new Sonoma in 1996, I did a comparison between the Chevy & the GMC to see what the differences were. The GMC was about $300 more for the same hard options, but there were little touches (like the trick sun visors) that weren't available on the Chevy at all (save going to the parts counter and buying & installing them myself). I'm sure they do that on purpose.

I checked the GM Spec sheet for the '87 Cavalier and the Convertible was only available in the RS package... no Z24 convertible available... Notchback and Hatchback versions only. From the description above, the Convertible is an almost $5000 option... and $660 add for the V6.... WOW....Pricy for '87 !!
Was going to attach the file, but download manager says its too big...

But you could get Z24 Convertible in '88.

Interesting stuff...

Terry.

Convertibles were more money, because they were not a regular production car. Convertibles were made from coupes that GM
shipped to ASC to have the roof and doors cut down, along with other modifications.

Yep, I misread the Standard Catalog...

I did think it strange that an RS got a V6, since the RS package is usually all of the sporty stuff with the small engine.

I, too, am surprised that Chevy was only selling V6 ragtops in that era. Pretty pricey bowtie. Now I'm curious what the base price of a naturally aspirated Sunbird SE convertible was in '86/'87. I wonder how many sales Chevy lost to Pontiac to folks looking for a cheap drop-top.

Thanks guys for the responses.
Here in canada the price was probabely over 18,000$ for the convertible. I payed back then 12,000 for a sunbird hard top of course.
That why the whife was not interested to the cavy convertible. I made 300,000 miles on the sunbird in 12 years. After that the car was so rotten that it almost broke in two in the garage lift. All the glass broke and the car went to the scrap yard. Snif snif ! I loved that car.
Now i have the convertible cavy of my dream. Never to late to please yourself. Aha h ah !

So would that be Canadian Dollars at the time? US dollar was worth more vs. CD, I would think around $8000US for the Sunbird.

Also, is that 300,000 miles in miles or kilometers? 300,000k = 186,411 miles

either way some great miles, much more impressive if the 300,000 is in miles.

I dont remember the worth of the cdn dollars at that time.
But i remember that the cars were usely 2 or 3 thousand dolars more compare to the usa price.
300,000 kilometers was the total reading on the sunbird. It start to fell aparts at 200,000 kilo ( water in the doors- rusted rockers-trunk lid almost rotten away etc etc) but i loved soo mutch my little ´bird'´.! The only ting that i regret was that i dont check at this time if i can choose a different differential gear ratio on the automatic transmission. I kno now that there was 3 differents ratio . I changed my diff. Ratio on my cavalier and it is a very interesting modification. (For my point of view).
The only negative part from my bird was the fact that the engine was very hard to start whent cold. I took a lot of YEARS before they found the problem. The first winter (1988) whent cold, there was sometime 40 cars at the gm dealer waiting to find the starting problem.
