I'd feel a lot more confidant with some photos of the underside of this one. So much rust peeking out from around the bottom sides it is scary....

One particular shot of the tire condition (mismatched set of rubber by the way) leaves a wee bit of a hint under there - buckets of rust

These corner 2 bit car dealers will sell anything that hasn't been dragged to the crusher......and sleep well at night to boot.

The 5 speed along with the basic AM radio suggest this was 1986's Buick Door Buster for the model year. Couldn't have been anything much cheaper from Buick that year...

Buick Embarrassment!!!

This car is so basic, it didn't even come with an A/C system. Who out there has a 1st gen without an A/C?

Try and find a heater core for this one?

Manual vent pull- knobs? That is so 1970-ish!!

No AC, either. I do find it interesting that so many of the 'Hawks that have come up lately are such low-end examples. Seems to be atypical for the kind of cars you'd expect Buick buyers to be attracted to. When was the last time we saw one of these with a tach, power windows, & power locks?

My blue vert has no air conditioning. .A/C delete meant having the pull vents that actually work pretty good.

The brown vert came with A/C, power locks and auto trans.

In Green Bay. I saw this one years ago on a YouTube video. To each his own as far as taste, but I think there would be too much work to do to get it original for me:

Oh My Goodness I'd so enjoy that '86 Hawk/Hatch. So close to me too. I swear if I had the funds I'd hoard way too many of these machines. But that would NOT be a good thing since one cannot reasonable take care of , but a certain number at once and then the rest just sit and waste away. I found that out the hard way last year when I was trying to fix up a pair of 3rd Gens and neglecting the elder 1st Gens - and those old ones went downhill mighty fast on me too. Had I not gotten around to giving them some attention when I did I don't think they'd still be on the road now.

I gotta say I definitely don't like the looks of that rust along the bottom of the drivers side door and bottom of quarter ahead of the wheel well blistering up the way it is. A lot of trouble under there to be sure. The fuel and brake lines tend to run right up under the floor pan very near that rust on the quarter too - it wouldn't be hard for those to be in bad shape as well.

The color White is great for keeping an eye out for the rust bug. It is also an easy color to touch up and clear coat peel isn't nearly as noticeable on it either. I wasn't thrilled with that color on my 2nd Gen when purchased but have since grown to appreciate its virtues!
