2.0 OHV Idler Question
Sunday, March 13, 2005 12:38 PM
Hey gang,

Just swapped out a bad idler pulley yesterday, everything's back up and running fine. (No more screaming bearing noise )But I was curious...the 3 bolts that hold the idler / generator bracket to the cylinder head were actually tapped into the water jacket in the head. First, is this retarded? And second, I didn't do this but should I take them out and put some teflon tape or pipe sealant on the threads of these bolts just in case?

I was of the school of thought that all bolts that go through water / oil passages should have teflon tape or pipe sealant on them. Both the GM shop manual and Chilton's don't address this lovely piece of engineering, they just show a breakdown of the parts. No info on taking it off, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well if it were me I would use some permatex high temp thread sealant comes in a tube and is like liquid to put on those bolts. It sure would not hurt and give u a small piece of mine that at least it's on thier.

Good deal, Ron. Post pics as soon as you get a chance!

I have had no leaks since buttoning everything up on mine, and I didn't take it back apart. But like you said, Its better to be safe and throw a little "pipe dope" on there. Sounds like you're really going to town on your Type 10.
