ASC label

I finally got around to making a reproduction of my missing ASC door sticker. It blows, but here goes:

Feel free to copy and paste & photoshop your own dates in there if you need to. Anyone with a high-rez pic of their label?

Well, its a crappy shot, but at least its on the door. I know these got slapped on, and I think its close to where it used to be. Anyone out there can post and tell me if its off.

One more question for you ragtop guys, or anyone else...

What the hell went here? It looks like another place for some sort of sticker or decal. I can't find out what it was, and none of the cars I've seen on the road (or in the boneyards) have anything but old adhesive in this spot on the cowl, right above the blower motor. . Anyone know? I'm bored this summer...so I'm doing detail work.

Thanks!

I do not recall seeing a ASC sticker or decal on my door.Ummm is it only for converts or all cavs in general.I check my car this weekend ,being I have no rear wheels on and no shocks on it ,I am stripping my rear axle and repainting everything and pics will b shown once complete.

I'm pretty sure my '86 RS has that random decal above the blower motor. I'll find out what it is after the sun comes up.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was in a stupor when I posted

The ASC decal is for J convertibles. They were all shipped as Coupes when they were new and converted at their facility into converts. The sticker is a legal thing, just stating that the car was converted by Automotive Specialty Company and comforms to all safety standards of the day.

When the guy repainted the car, it was removed and I've had NO luck getting a repro or any graphics to reproduce it from ASC. They suck. They're busy these days doing the SSR, and Toyota Solara convertibles and they don't want to deal with my requests. I understand, but how hard is it to send me a graphic of the company's old logo?

So I had someone snap a picture of theirs and I just made a crappy photoshop and made my own. It looks like ass all blown up, but printed on some nice paper, laminated, and glued to the door...it looks close enough.

But there's still a sticker missing from the top of the cowl...I was just curious if it was another ASC sticker or something else. Anyone that has something there can just snap a pic and tell me what its supposed to be.

As you can tell I'm bored, and I like decals.

My 88 has the APC sticker, its all scuffed up now though never noticed it before. I had a sticker under the hood like you're looking for but its gone now, just bits of paper are left.

Ylime- I can try and send you a better copy of the one I "made" from someone's picture of theirs. You can photoshop your dates on there and make it look correct. I wound up resizing mine and it came out better.

I think my obsession with decals came from building models as a kid. But there's nothing more I like to see at car shows, etc than a restored car with all the window stickers, tags, and inspection marks.

a non vert door wont work on a vert, coupe doors have window frames, so yours will be from a vert.

The sticker above the hvac fan is missing from my 89 ragtop also. But on my 93 Coupe there's a paper sticker with a bar code and the VIN number.

Sharkey- A convertible door IS a coupe door with the window frame cut off. The verts were all shipped out as coupes to ASC, which chopped them up and cut the tops off.

The only difference is the window regulator & "inner door panel" which is riveted in to the door skin. You can actually make a set of convertible doors from clean coupe doors if you have to...but its a pain.

I just found our that you can order new old stock decals fromASCmclaren.com. But they cost $20 a piece

Oh well. I'll grab one and save it for when I repaint the entire car.

slowolej- Thanks for the pic of the sticker. I'm looking for the correct placement on my door. Originally I think mine was crooked as hell!

There's a better scan.

You can see by the picture that mine's over the bend in the side of the door. I've owned 2 different ragtops, and the stickers have been in different locations on the door. I stripped some parts from a Z24 convertible in a junkyard and that sticker was below the latch and closer to the bottom of the door. I think they only cared that the sticker was installed. Placement was up to the installer.

Thanks for the link. I know someone that had to order some wheel center caps from those guys at a ridiculous price. When the new parts arrived he found a Ford part number on the back. The part number was still good and the price was 1/3 of what he paid through the McClaren group. But at least we can get our decals.

If you remove the rubber plug from the back of a 'vert door you can see the sawzall marks left over from cutting the window frame off. And you can see where the roof was cut off if you remove the interior trim. I can't imagine how much fun it must be to attack brand new cars with a sawzall and cutoff wheel.

Yeah, I couldn't bring myself to go to town on a brand new car.

I've been trying (with no luck) to get some copies of pictures of the ASC plant during the 80's. I'd like to see pics of them converting Cavaliers and Sunbirds, and Camaros, etc.

But two letters, a phone call, and several emails have gotten me nowhere.

Mine has it.

The actual sticker separated from the car some time ago but I saved it.

The only ASC decal (to my knowledge) is the inside of the driver's door, above the GM build sticker. If you're really friggin' anal about it, the date of the manufacture will be in the format "Month Abbreviation YY" in standard typewriter face with a piece of all weather tape over it.

I need to write a book on this stuff, dammit.......
Re: ASC label

i found the sticker on my car, its extremely worn, but the sticker itself is still there, the bottom of the sticker is maybe two inches above the top screw for the door latch...
and there was is also sticker residue on the plastic panel below the cowl...whatever sticker was there is long gone

is there supposed to be one of those metal gm tags on the door ?
Re: ASC label
Monday, July 11, 2005 3:14 PM
Unless that sticker is a first gen convertible thing only, I have no clue what it is. I know for a fact the '88-89s do not have one.

The placement of the ASC tags are all over the place; mine actually covers about 1/2" of my build tags.

And yes, every one of these cars should have a pair of square, white build tags located on the inside of the driver's door. If they are missing, the door has been repainted.

David- Long time no see. Or read, or post, or whatever Still up in Bloomington? Hope all is well.

Yes, I know the date was on a piece of tape...but I couldn't find a good way to duplicate it. I'm not going for "concours" looks. I just wanted to make a decal to replace the one the butthead took off when he repainted the car. It works.
