my friend is buying a first gen...
Friday, June 10, 2005 10:05 AM
he is looking at a 3-door 85 cavalier "type-10". it has 71k on it. has a 2.0FI. Is there actually such a thing as type-10 or is it dealer rice? anything i should make sure it comes with? Dealer wants $1,995 for it, this a good price? i wanted to know from the first gen people if it is a good car, any common problems, etc....

Now, it was a factory thing- a rather vague and not promoted trim level. The brochure did not really explain it well either. Essentially, it was the 'lace' (my term) wheels, the 'Type 10' badges on the side and rump, and frankly, not much else.

It was the 'sport model' of the Cavs, per Chevy, but it was really just a trim package. The hardware was unchanged.

Many Cavs on the new car lot were Type 10- so much so that it was harder to find one that was not a Type 10. It is worth nothing extra, then, or now.

depends on the condition of the car. i bought my 86 z24 for $300 canadian, it ran but needed a clutch. body had some dents, a bit of rust, but nothing horrible. a couple of my friends have 87 z24s, one payed $1500 canadian, running driving car. the other is abby87z24 on here, payed $600 for his car, running/driving as well.

if the car is in absolute perfect shape, its worth it, but if the body isnt the greatest, interior needs work, over 150k miles, id be thinking more like $1000.

post some more details about the car

seems like a high price too me, but you're getting it from a stealership that never helps, FWIW I got a type 10 hatchback in good shape w/ about 150k for 350 bucks last year

I just a quick check and for a 85 hatch with ps/pb/ac auto, alloy whls an the mileage u specd it was 1330.00 kelly blue book, nada did not go bk to 85 just 86yr models.I would not pay more than a 1000.00 given if u hv to repair or etc other things it'll cost,1995.00 is obsurd making a offer with in the true value of the car is more like reality.I would take quotes from kelly blue bk to show the actual book if the guys really interested in it.

Type 10 was a series before the RS came out. Red & black trim, blackout grille, door handles, etc.

Sounds like a low mileage original car. If its clean 1-1300 or so is all I would pay. Post pics and stuff once your friend gets it.

What a bunch of crap. People can be real tools sometimes.

I drove a 64 Chevy in high school, and I had some friends with parents that were all scared the car was old and unsafe. I understand the concern, but I also knew my car was always kept in top shape. Its kind of like getting every kid a helmet for their bikes.

But not every kid needs a new Honda.

Is this the car that is on Autotrader.com now? Located in York, Pa. Orange colored Hatch located at Apple, Honda?

I came across it today as I was doing a search for First Gen Cavs.....

Yes thats the car on autotrader, and yes its way overpriced. I payed 1200 for my 86 RS. It was in good condition and it only had 42k on it when bought.
