My car went in a couple of months ago. I should have it back any time and will post pics. Here are the ones of it leaving for paint...

Distant-

It will be a two stage red, similar to the 75U that is on it, but with a ton of clear coat. It is going to look like a stock 85 when done (I like the 85 spoiler and vented hood).

This is an original Michigan car, I am on my second trunk lid and the doors need attention every couple of years. They did it right this time, took the door off and took car of a rotted a-pillar. I have to get the trim cleaned up and ready to go.

I missed my target of the dream cruise, but better to do it right if you are gonna do it.

Then clutch, then mods, then track.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Did you have them spray your OEM hood too just in case you want to go back to it someday?

Daryl-

I was thinking about that, but the stock hood is pretty far gone from holding water 8 years on the side of the house. The stock deck lid went years ago. Mine will be sporting the 85 look from now on. No stickers though...

I went by Parts Galore today, quite a few second gen Z24s there, saw two clean cowl hoods... and a convertible with a pretty good interior.

That's great! Can't wait to see it when it's done. Also, nice to read about a turbo Sunbird that hasn't detonated and brought more scorn from the V6 crowd! Good luck!

Scored a new interior, now top and wheels will complete the exterior restification.

Then back to engine mods, clutch, boost control, bov, intercooler.

Here are some updates.

The car has been in much longer than anticipated due to the doors practically falling apart when sanded. Progress is being made, the spoiler and hood have been painted the updated 75U Red. You can see the new color in the first pic. I have been visiting the u-pick it and getting parts here and there. It looks better... I still have to decide on the wheels and figure out exactly how things are gonna work with the updated turbo/intercooler setup. Whenever I visit the car, there is a small group around it talking about the fact that you do not see these anymore.

I did not realize that js came with the green tape headlights thanks to 3m,That tape is freakin awesome to use,I used it on my rear end project. And ur paint is not to shiny u should use to turtle wax or nu finish to shine it.Oh well out with the humour glad to see that while it does take time to do paint glad to see it's making progress!Good luck on the end result.COOl pics.

Ron-

Good comments. I was thinking I would try "back to black" and see if the whole car would turn to a nice glossy black.

It is coming along. I will post more pics as I get them.

Update: I score more stock waist trim at the u-pick it. I have to get the front fender trim for each side (specific to the 6-light front end). This has been a problem as most of the cars that come in have wasted trim. I also need to get the antenna mounts stuff as it seems to have disappeared.

Hopefully see car in the couple of months - no hurry as I have more cars than garage space.

Glad to hear its coming along, Paul. I couldn't tell you how many J2000's and Sunbirds I looked at in Evansville's Pull-A-Part that had trashed trim. I was always looking for ya, but nothing nice came in.

can't wait to see her with the new interior, paint, etc.

Update-

The car is out of the paint booth and finally being reassembled - well the part the body shop is doing anyways. I still need a few exterior trim pieces and carpet, and figure out the wheel situation to complete what I had planned to finish last year.

Stuill trying to decide on wheels/carpet/top/engine mods.

I will take pics and get them up here as soon as I get them sorry about having a lame project with no updates.

Hey, don't sweat it. Real life build-ups and restorations take longer than the ones on TV

When you get done, post up and we'll all drool and envy your clean 'bird. Until then, have a beer & chill

Updated Pics from this past weekend. The car is actually coming out piece by piece. The hood, rear bumper cover, cowl, and spoiler are done. Speed = Glacial +

Here are the cars I have been driving since the sunbird has been in paint shop prison, my 04 Impala (the daily), the 96 Grand Am (the spare), and my 94 Z28(the faster car).:

Nice to see things are slowly progressing.I still those neon green 3m hdlights are much brighter than the oem ones. And to have 3 more rides to kick around in while ur resto is in formation is a good thing.I myself have not touched my car in two wks.I am dragging my feet and here soon no more dragging.I am going with new axles both sides and new suspension both sides front and restoration meaning new everything!I am going with monroe's quick strut which includes the whole strut, new mounts, springs all assembled that will b done after my axles r replaced by ME,of course. When I start my project I will post b4 and after pics.

Someone else HAS one of these? Mindboggling.

Of course, mine now has a blown engine and similarly dead turbo.

Looks like I could have saved a ton of money and just bought yours for the clean body.

What are your plans with it?

Awesome paul. cant wait to see it all re-assembeled, wheels coming to mind would be 3rdgen LS sport wheels, a mild drop, my carpet was from ohiocarpets, and i was NOT all that impressed with the vert fitment so keep that in mind if you so choose!

Looks good Paul!

Did you get all the trim you needed?

Daryl-

I am all set for now - I did not know that some pieces I was looking for are common between the first and second gen cars. I am going to order the carpet this week, and then get the new interior in.
