chirping speedometer
Saturday, December 10, 2005 6:32 PM
my speedometer has been chirping fairly noticably lately, along with fluttering. i assume the cable needs to be lubed? if thats the case how would i go about that and what would be a good lubricant, or would it better to just get a new cable?

thanks,
dayton

Easy fix for u ,just remove the speedo cable at the transmission and use white lithium grease in a small container sold by napa. They carry it near the wheel bearing grease and it's called lith-ease ,advance and auto zone do not carry anything like this carquest might.Anyhow just put some grease inside the cable end and reinstall, this will solve the problem you do not need a new cable. What happens is there is not lubrication inside the cable causing the issue and all that is needed is the above.Any more ? just ask.Ok by the way do not use the aeresol version of lithium grease it does not fix the issue u need what I stated, its grease that's solid in form and not liquid.

Yes b4 the newer electronic gear driven sensor type. All first gen,for sure have a cable that goes from the speedo to the transm on top.It just screws in and it's as simple as that.Thats what all manufactures used prior to the change over to the new electrical type seen in most newer cars aprox 90s and up some early 90s may b cable still but each manuf changed at some time during that decade.

dont be so sure of that. i have an 86 z24 and it uses a speed se3nsor, no cable at all. all digital dash cars never had a speedo cable. all analogue cars 85+ has cable/electronic. 91+ all use electronic only.

Yeah.. 85+ sunbirds at LEAST definetly only have electric speedos. I know mine do for sure, and I know the 85 and 86 do too since they had the turbo 1.8 in those years. So agian, I think cable driven is definetly far more rare then you're taking into account.

oops forgot about all that hi tech electrical stuff in some of the first gens.Well at least my mazda truck it's a 87 has a cable but,it's foreign so I am thinking thats not unusual. So be it I am liking my cable deal much easier to deal with issues versus electrical stuff,Yet I have just learned some more thanks.

Mine did the same thing. I removed the cluster head and squirted some speedo lube into the cable. The cluster is very easy to remove. Solved the noise problem.

My 86 and at least 2 87's I've come across in the boneyard have had cables...maybe I should have snagged them for spares.

Doh!

You have to insert the [IMG] b4 the Http etc stuff so when u use it as ur sig it will show the pic.JUST use the PREVIEW button in the bottom right hand corner to verify it works! IF u still do not understand this go to the newbie forums and click on the STICKY for posting pics it will walk u thru each step to post pics ,which is relatively the same for making ur signature work to a degree.Like I said when u go to ur forum options and paste or copy ur info for ur pic make sure it looks like [IMG] then ur info here then and then hit the save and preview it and it should work.Hope this all makes sense.OK

I failed to mention it should be at the end. When u insert ur pasted info insert the above should appear at the end automatically,if it does'nt insert it.Just forgot some things after I posted so hopefully u can make sense of all this.
