These are the listings I found in my chiltons.Yr models 1981-1987 engine code is first ,cu in liters, cyl, fuel system, eng manuf. is how it will be shown.
  • G 110 ohv 1.8 4 2bbl chev
  • O 110 ohv 1.8 4 tbi pontiac
  • J 110 ohv 1.8 4 mfi turbo pontiac
  • B 122ohv 2.0 4 Either 2bbl or tbi chev
  • P 122 ohv 2.0 4 tbi chev
  • M 122ohc 2.0 4 mfi turbo chev
  • 1 122ohv 2.0 4 tbi HO chev
  • K 122 ohv 2.0 4 tbi chev
  • W 173 2.8 v6 mfi chev
This is book info any feel pretty sure its accurate B is 81 yr,C is 1982,D 1983,E 1984, F 1985 ,G 1986, H 1987 these are model yrs and gm did switch from carbs to tbi somewhere in 82-83 models. Now for 1987 -1989 M 2.0L ohc turbo was listed in haynes no chev or pont indication, and 1990 listed M 2.0 L ohc turbo. I know haynes is not specific on the 87-89 on make but, clearly the 90 is sec gen stuff.

Aaron, yes Pontiac used a Brazilion built 2.0 Turbo from 1987 through 1990. The engine put out 165 HP and all of the engines were supposedly dynoed to make sure. They also produced this motor in 1.8 liter 150 horse versions in 1985 and 86. The engine was also used in some Buicks, but never in Chevies. Chevy went with the V-6 for more torque in their J-Bodies. The Turbo cars were expensive and rare. They required extra service and were prone to head gasket failure. Because of the high cost of repairs and service, many were junked when it came time to fix them. I have a 1987 Sunbird Turbo GT Convertible. It cost over $17,000 new and is one of 917 built. I have about $4,000 in mine. It's a ball to drive, but if it gets wrecked, the insurance value would probably be $100. Email me at monzagoat@yahoo.com if you have more questions.

im gessing their program at the [arts store asks them if it was tbi, cause it could have been within a few years of your car. i know the parts store i go to asks if my car is carb or efi. they never made a v6 j-body with a carb, but in 85, some 2.8l came with carbs in other cars.

Sharkey's got the prize for this one.

No factory turbo TBI Sunbird.

Not so sure about the claims of high maintenance, poor reliability on turbo vs tbi. Been a mechanic for enough years and owned enough Sunbirds to know _all_ OHC being turbo, NA, mpfi, TBI, are prone to bad heads / gasket failure. It's just a matter of time. Def. agree with parts cost, though.

What part are you looking for specifically? That may have more to do with how the listing shows up in the computer.
