The very short is price is good for a parts car, unless you have a worse off car to swap parts. The young man who does not check the fluids means the car is hurting in pictures you want see until in front of the car. Both my nephews are semi hard on there own cars and done a TON to revive them and fix or clean them back to a acceptable point.I personally would pass this unless I had a identical version needing items that are far worse. That car has pain written ALL over it,and the cost to revive it exceeds the real value in a running condition.Just my straight up point of view.

Interesting story. Hope someone will save it.
The Skyhawk is a rare bird and the pop up head lights are just cool on a J car.

Well, I saved it.

The mechanicals don't bother me. I've got a couple spare engines if I can't save the one that's in it. The dash and seats are really nice.

The rust scares me a bit, but it's not as bad as my first 'Hawk.

My wife and I talked about converting my '93 ragtop into a 'Bu-iac' as I always loved the attention my Skyhawk convertible got. For the record, the headlight doors don't pop-up, they drop down.

With less than 20k S-type coupes built in '87, my dad would like to see it restored.

One way or another, there will be one more Skyhawk back on the road, even if it's titled as a '93 Pontiac.

Welcome to the site! I see you have a problem like we do (love the 1st gen jbody).I guess once you start to tackle the updating just start yourself a new post as I know I would.I spent my afternoon working on one 05 accord with multiple problems.Hours I spent about 5 and that was doing some basic cleaning(engine bay) and checking the mechanical wear stuff.I also installed new headlights. We on this board have a variety of cars in the 1st gen area.My quick info is 1985 cav type 10 2.0ohv factory sunroof, star wheels and yellow gold.I try to keep my ride oem stock aside from the radio head and updated speakers.Work done ALOT.I will stop as I am just wiped out and aching from the twisting, bending and carrying heavy stuff.Once you start a NEW post show the beginning as it sits then show things as you improve it.I see your not the average jbody owner with the corral of cars.

No, I don't like average...

I've been lurking around for a long time (I think my account here goes back to 2003), but I haven't done much posting. I noticed that I wasn't the only one who spotted the eBay auction, but refrained from making comment until the car was safe at its new home. I've had a long to-do list for quite some time, but my dad's '56 Buick has taken precedence for the last few years.

Now that my dad is feeling pretty good about his car, he's saying it's time to tackle some j-body projects that have been neglected. I've been so focused on stuff that *has* to get done for so long that it's nice to turn my attention to the fun stuff. This winter I plan to put a 5 speed Getrag in my '83 turbo, put the auto from my '83 in my '93 ragtop and get it painted, and stop the cancer that's eating away the '87 'Hawk. That and I need to put an engine in dad's truck. It's looking like a busy winter! I've promised the ragtop for a St. Pats parade, so I gotta get cracking!

love the vert! did it have a Hawk interior or a sunbird interior?

so glad you have the pic of the CART pacecar, I've been trying to find good pics of the most coolest looking Hawk for a long time.

It was full-on Buick; same dash as my '87. Full gauges, power windows & locks, remote trunk, sport steering wheel... It really should have been a Limited, but they wanted vinyl seats for the drop top, so it was a Custom with almost all of the T-type stuff added on.

It even had a switch on the dash for the rear window defog.

Yeah, one of these days I'll do a full write up because I get asked so many questions...

I've got a few more pix in a public album in FB: https://goo.gl/5jyHvj

This is a saved cluster I removed for wayne Schiff and cleaned up and sent to him. This is just a touch of my crazy refreshing in case you have not seen some of my work done. It really IS refreshing to have a new Old member pop back in and just as devoted to these cars as we all here.I myself am a parts hoarder and trust me I think myself and orlen have a jbody junkyard of parts and I am being literally.I will say last proved tough finding even some simple stuff.Just the age of the cars and junkyards move there inventory quick. However I do scour some out of date places not like that.I am going to focus on finding things I want specific this year and source some odd and ends as I know here in nc there are cars just sitting. This cluster just kicks a-- to me.Removing said dash on the buick Skyhawk was a job for sure, but I did remove it correctly!Car got scraped before I went back the next week to save some more.

I pulled a lot of parts out of the ragtop before it was scrapped, but I don't remember if I kept the guages or not. I've got boxes of parts in my shop attic...

At one point I my odometer broke so I pulled a guage out of salvage. I didn't think to check when I pulled it, but apparently they were doing 6 place and 7 odos, and I replaced the original 7 with a 6. Oops.

Matt-

I am thinking the Getrag 282 5-speed swap would be something to consider for my 84. Thinking it would be subtle but better all around, then maybe I convert to the 2.0 turbo setup and call it good. Which one were you looking at putting in your car - MG1?

We had to do my dyno pull in 3rd...

Well, I have a '90 GT that I bought as a parts car, so the '83 will get the 282 out of that. There are advantages to keeping an auto with the turbo, but I had a '96 5-speed Cav that was just plain fun to drive, even though it had the junky pushrod motor. I really kinda miss that, plus the current gears are set up for the 55 MPH federal speed limit, so the overdrive of the 282 should make highway driving a bit more tolerable.

I was an idiot and left the original transmission in the '93 when I transplanted the engine out of the Skyhawk into it. The Skyhawk transmission worked fine except for the TCC, but I kept the '93 trans that I knew nothing about hoping the TCC worked. The idiot that owned the '93 thought it was something awesome and had all kinds of cheesy eBay mods on it (no wonder the motor was blown), so I should have assumed the gearbox was toast as well. I don't know what he did to it, but it will not shift from 1st to 2nd until you hit 40 MPH. Period. Ever. It's really obnoxious. If I drop off the gas at 35, it's like putting the clutch in on a standard. The engine will go to idle, and the car will coast. Bring the power back in and there's nothing until the input catches up with the transmission when it kicks you in the back of the head. I've NEVER had a THM125 act like this one. 2nd & 3rd are perfectly normal, but I cannot tell you how much I hate 1st gear on that car.

I know the speedo is going to give me trouble with the '90 Getrag when I put it into the '83, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. My plan has been to MegaSquirt the '83, but I was actually going to use the '93 as my first test to learn MS on. If I goof and blow that motor up with a bad tune, I will be much less heartbroken.

I was doing some cleaning in the garage tonight, and came across this remanent of the '82. It still had a small piece of red lens attached to it, so I put it on the wood stove for a while and liberated it from the lens.

You guys have gotten me all nostalgic. I'm about done with with my 'Hawk convertible write up, but it's pushing 1800 words...
