Engine Swap
Thursday, January 13, 2005 11:51 AM
Ok, I need some help, I want to swap in a higher performance engine in my Firenza. I was thinking either a carbed 2.8L V6 or a 2.5L I4 but I want to know more about swaps and the engine has to be carburated, and have a decent amount of aftermarket mods for it. Also where can I find any info in the Firenza GT? Thank you for any help.
why does it have to be carbed???

what i would do is throw in a wiring harness and ecm from a 3.1l and drop a 3400 in. 180hp, and decent mods for them.

if it has to be carbed, then go with a carbed 2.8l
I've got an '86 RS... would a 3400 match up to my current transmissoin (Yes, I forgot the model of the tranny; it's a 3 spd auto)? Also, is anyone near Enid, OK?

Or you could get a 3.1 and put a 2.8 top end on it, carbed manifold, heads, etc...

the 2.8 top end you are reffering to would be a gen 1 top end, as there never was a carbed intake for a gen 2 motor. if you used a 3.1l with this, you would need it from a lumina apv van, or you would have to swap the top end and pistons onto a gen 2 motor. the reason the pistons would need to be swapped is bacuase aluminum head pistons and ironheads would end up with something like 7:1 compression, and thats not ideal on anything (unless you use nitromethane)
Where are you from? I got a complete 2.8 sittin in a celebrity that doesn't have a title. It's got a vaccum problem or something, it hesitates when you get on the gas and stalls at idle sometimes. I will let it go for cheap if youre around west michigan.

if you are looking for some performance and you do have access to an old iron head 2.8 you can install an aftermarket aluminum intake for a four baral carb edelbrock p/n 3789 for the top and 3785 for the base
however if you want some real go you could try to sorce a 3.1 turbo out of a 89/90 grand prix "gtp" not gpt you will have to rewire but that is not that hard to do.
good luck

actualy, it was a grand prix tgp. hard to find motor, even harder to put into a j body. realy the motor is nothing but a typical 3.1l with a different plenum. out of the whole turbo setup, about all you can actualy use is the turbo, rear exaust manifold, and oil and coolant lines.

for all the work of putting a turbo 3.1l in, you can go with a 3400. sure your down 25hp, but if (and i stress "if") you ever found a turbo 3.1l, its gonna cost you...a lot. the money you would save on a 3400 swap could be used to build it up a bit.

Ok, I will have my hands on a 3.1 soon(I HOPE) So I will put an Edelbrock intake, carb and cam in it and more depending on cash flow. I am also planning on getting a Geo Metro for a daily driver while I fix up the Firenza. Thank you for any help.

just so you are aware, you cant use a carb intake with aluminum heads. the aluminum heads are way different from the cast iron counterparts that the carb intakes are designed for.the only 3.1l you would be able to use would be from a lumina apv van (its a 3.1l fwd with rwd cast iron heads and intake), and you would need to find a timing cover from an 85-86 j body (the j body ironhead motor had a car specific timing cover).

come to think of it, im not sure if the rwd carb intake would even work with the j body timing cover.
