To swap or not to swap?
Monday, February 28, 2005 4:47 PM
I have a stock 92' Cavalier with the 2.2 OHV engine that needs a lot of TLC. I've considered having the entire engine replaced instead of flinging parts into the old one. Now, had I the tools and time I'd very much enjoy doing it myself but that is not the case.

So my question to the pro's here is this. Which engine would best increase performance while being relatively quick to install? I have to consider labour costs so the easier the better. Its also an automatic.

T.I.A. to all suggestions and opinions.

I'd DEFinately swap. I think the relatively quickest best quality would be the 3100 or 3400. I'm looking to swap for a 2.0L turbo, but have plenty of time for it, unless my current engine blows for some unexpected reason. anyway, you can't go wrong with increased performance from these two. only drawbacks are they're considerably heavier engines, but let the other guys tell you more in detail cause I'm barely a rookie compared to them.

actuly the 2.3 qaud4 was rated at 180hp and the 3100 is only rated at 150hp. im not sure how simple the quad4 swap is but i've seen people do it befor with good results.

you could just do the 3.1L V6 and get the same hp stock

I like the idea of the 3.1. Should run much smoother with a v6 as well. Looks can come later I want more power first

Will the automatic trany be a problem? What about wiring and the Rad?

ahhhh the 2.3 is a big ol pile o' monkey poo. its definately good for power but to work on suck. i'd prolly go with a 3.1

2.0 Turbo was the quickiest cavalier production car. STOCK. 15.4 on a 5spd. STOCK!

however, i like the quad 4 motor. strong, quick, and torquey.

yea, but if you look at the olds calais 442 W41 (N body), they were able to pull 14.6 times STOCK on a 5 speed. those calais weighed the same as the Jbodies. much better motor.

3400 sfi would prolly be the best reasonable swap.

you could go with the 3800 s/c but that would involve alot more work meaning that its a much larger motor (3.1/3100/3400 are all 60 degree Vs and the 3800 is a 90 degree V). you would also need the ecm and harness from the 3800. im sure there is also more stuff needed to do the swap, i just cant think of them right off the top of my head....im still a noob.

Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?

You're gonna need the wiring harness and ecm whether you go with the 3.1, 3100, 3400, or the 3800.

I understand that I'll need wiring and I think i'll install an independent tach instead of a new gauge cluster.

My biggest fear is the transmission. Can anyone tell me which of these engines will bolt up to an automatic, if any?

I don't mind standard but I'm not the only driver.

the 3.1 is a direct bolt on. or so I've heard.

depending on your budget, I'd either reccomend a 3.1 L swap or a 3400 swap. expect to pay around 4-600 more in parts for a 3400 swap (mount and exhaust and a few other things are different.)

your auto tranny will bolt to both the 3.1 and the 3400 no problem.

Perfect. Thats what I wanted to know. There's a shop in my area that will give me a good deal on labour and parts. I'll have them look into the 3.1 for me including the harness and ecm.

Thanks guys. I'll let you know how it goes.
