any ideas.. placement of guage pod in 2nd Gen Cav?
Monday, March 28, 2005 9:54 PM
hello, i have an AutoMeter dual 2" dash mount guage pod. this thing would fit perfect in my '91 Sunbird, because it has the flat dash. but the sunbird has a OEM tach already and i would like it in my '94 Cav. I am interested in hearing any ideas where i can put this thing. it is not for a cavalier but i got it for pretty much nothing off of a friend.

see the Cavalier has the slanted dash (not flat). it would be a stupid idea to put it up on the headliner i assume, and probably out of the way. i like the look of it and i would like to have it somewhere in the car, just not really sure where. up on the headliner mounted upside down with the guages flipped right side up and the whole thing faced toward the driver on a bit of an angle wouldnt be bad but it would more than likely be out of the way too much. it's kind of a half moon shape, probably about 3 1/2" high and maybe 6" deep, and wide enough across for (2) 2" guages + a bit on each side. anyone have any ideas, or just scrap the idea?
Thanks

You could seal off the ashtray and put it below the HVAC on the center console... I don't know it it would actually work, mine's an Auto, I haven't had a good look at a manual. You could also try to pull your cupholder out and mount it there, but it could be a burden for a passanger to get in/out.

great! 2 awesome suggestions, i will give those ideas a look and see if i could make something work. i never even thought of the ashtray or cupholders! even if I dont have the depth, i can cut some off the back of the pod, and just leave as much as can be seen so i still have the face, etc. as long as i leave enough to mount it! lol something is gonna end up working one way or another without me making it look supid or tacky hehe.
thank you Wraith . for the excellent suggestions

anyone got any more ideas?

Why cant you mount it on the slanted dash? is it just cause the guages would point towars the floor and not at you? If thats the case then just grind off some of teh back of it until it sits the way you want it ie: facing strait ahead.
or maybe you could work it into the pillar. I dont know what it looks like so its hard to say if that would work well or not. I like the ashtray idea though.

yeah exactly, it would point towards the floor and not at the driver. looks like alot of grinding will be involved though. i don't know how to post pics on the forum here. from the front it is a half-moon shape, and if you flip it over and look from the bottom its like a hollow D shape with the guages going in the flat part of the D and the curved part is the back.

Ok I see, so it would'nt work at all for a pillar guage pod, lol
I'd just do the ash tray thing if I were you.

yeah thats about all i can do i guess.. if there was more space on the height i could dremel the bottom a bit to fit it around the pillar but the way it is it would interfere with the guages themselves.. so yea i guess all i can do is try the ashtray thing. i see they have universal single pillar pods, but they have to be shipped from taiwan so that sucks. so yea if the ashtray thing doesnt work i'm just gonna scrap the idea, lol

I thank you both for the suggestions

yeah i read that the TRIPLE autometer pillar pods for the 79-93 Mustang will fit, so do any of ya's know if it would be the same thing with the dual pillar pods? the local shop here only sells the dual guage pods for the pillars and not the triple. so if the double guage pods will fit that would be UNBELIEVABLE!
