very rough idle/engine work when starting
Thursday, March 31, 2005 8:56 PM
hello there. so i just bought this 92 sunbird, and i already am having problems with it... the problem is that, whenver i start the car, engine cold or warm, it seems to be almost chocking and shaking violently... when i start driving, it still shakes, so i have to floor it for some time so that the engine begins working normally... i have a 3 month warranty on the car, and im just wondering what the problem might be, so i dont look like a retard trying to explain it at the dealership

seems to be or is it really rocking back and forth? If the engine is literally rocking back and forth its probably your engine mounts.

no im not talking about the engine itself moving, ir just feels like the car is about to stall... maybe its just bad gas or something... but when i start going, the car still shakes violently, and i have to rev the engine up pretty high for it to become normal again...

Have you tried cleaning you the throttle body and plenum? That gave me a rough idle on my 92 Cav for a while.

Check this out

They have a how to on how to do it yourself. Its for a V6, but the cleaning part is the same. I'm going to do mine this weekend, I've been having the same problems.

That walkthrough is good, but make sure you go ahead and buy another TB Gasket despite that thing saying you can use what you got. Mine disintegrated upon removal and I only had that car to drive to get parts. Luckily, I knew it would happen and had the gasket ready.

i had about the same problem as you do. I added some Lucas injector cleaner and my engine definitely rides and idles alot better
