91 shifts hard?

I bought a 91 2.2 5-speed Cav today from a friend of a friend.

The car runs and drives good, but it shifter moves very hard, and you cannot always get it into reverse. When it goes in reverse it works fine, but the shifter is just so stiff..

Someone claimed that the shifter cables were already replaced... could this be in the transmission or not likely?

if its realy stiff, its the cables. id pull the console and have a look there, also inspect them in the engine bay. they could be kinked or bent realy tightly, causing them to be stiff.
