Extra wires?!?
Monday, June 27, 2005 1:01 PM
Okay, so I have a slight situation. My convertible top button broke off while putting it down the other day so I decided to take off the panel (88 cav. Z24) to see about "engineering" it back together. Well when I pulled the cover off I had wires with harness going into the wiper switch, wires and harness for the convertible top, and wires and harness just laying there in my dash. Does anyone have any clue what they are suppose to be. My a/c and heat dont work but I dont recall anything missing from the back of that panel, I think its just a blower motor issue. Can anyone help?? Thanks!!

These cars have extra wires everywhere...for instance, PH2 Cavy tail lights still have a seperate brake wire going to the harness, then switches from 4 wires to 3...also, Sunbird trunk lids have the license plate light wiring going up there, even though the license plate is mounted on the bumper...

Do the wires have any sort of connector on them or just laying around? Someone may have left over wires from an alarm install/ stereo install etc etc. And like 89sunbird said they do have a few spares sometimes. my car for instance has all of the wiring for Daytime running lights, but it does not have them!

no this thing has a harness connected to the wires... cant remember how many wires connected to the harnes, maybe 8 or so. Its kinda in a wierd place for them though and I know my car is loaded from the factory...So no reason or need at all for extra wires. Boy am I confused!!

strange that it's an actual harness... are the wires different colours and if so what colours? and are they already exposed on the end (ready to use/look used) or un prepped?

Well given that my car is 17 years old, It appears that the harness has been used before. I am not sure what colors they are but when I get home I will find out for you, maybe even snap a photo if I can pull them out enough to take a picture. The location of the harness just seems wierd. Does anyone know if there was a different switch or something under the wiper switch on non-convertible cars?? maybe its for that, but that still dont make sense.

I know its not the stereo harness because the guy that owned it before had spliced the wires (not real smart) for the new (not at all great) head unit.

I reconize that thick orange wire, it goes into one of the relays on the passenger side up by the firewall, I forget what relay it was, I think its a/c I'll check the next time im out there.

no I dont have any blower at all, thought my motor was bad but havent had a chance to test it. do you know where this harness plugs into?? I checked the back of the control unit this morning and didnt see where it would go. This would make sense as to why my ac don't work though. lol

That looks like the blower motor connector to me. It should plug into the back of the blower switch

Try looking around the blower motor from the inside under the dash, I'm not sure were it would be though. Usually a plug is somewhat near the other end of it and isnt to hard to find. And dont be looking for another harness for this to plug into it just might be strait into the side of the blower motor, so there wouldnt be any other wires.

actually the plug going into the blower motor is inside the engine compartment on my car. I scoped that out a while ago. Thanks for the ideas though!!

lol its not digital. This is so crazy! All my gages work too so I know it dont belong there. I will probably pull my gages out this weekend anyhow so I can disable the stupid shift light and figure out why my brake light dont ever go off. Maybe have an answer on this by the end of the weekend!!
