1991 2.2 Head swap
Thursday, October 30, 2008 7:15 AM
I currently have a 1991 2.2 TBI with the air cleaner on top of engine thats the throtle body right?. What head can I swap onto this engine 90 and 91 only ? If I switched to a 92-93 or 94+ would I have to change alot of stuff ? My water pump went out in March didn't notice right away and now I think my headgasket has a leak. Antifreeze is burning in combustion chamber I think, it's cold and Anti freeze is dissapearing somewhere. So I figured while I had it apart why not do a head swap. This car is my DD and only has 104,000 miles so I want to do the head right so I don't have to fix it again like planed crack checked ect... The stupid cheap ass thermostat broke at 60,000 miles and ate the first head Gasket.

I did a TBI to MPFI swap on my old 91 Cavalier almost 10 years ago!! Lemme see if I can remember what needs to be done.

92-94 head
92-94 intake manifold
92 injector harness
92-94 throttle cable
MPFI fuel pump (from a V6 or a 92-94 4 cylinder J body)

The ONLY wires you need to splice are the blue and pink wires for the fuel injectors. Just match up the wire colors on teh 92 fuel injector harness.

Everything else is pretty much straight forward. I put 5,000 miles on my Cavalier with the new MPFI intake powered by the TBI computer with no bad side effects (accept for it running a bit rich at idle). I ended up getting rid of my Cavalier cause I got a new car. I regret doing that.

I'll have to look over that all u need to know 2.2 thread, however....

I had a 94 cav w/ 2.2. I used a 91 head on it, twas completely the same. Older 2.0 heads would work except there is an extra notch in the intake ports.

HA, no edit option. I'm sorry the head I used was from a 92. 90-91 is a 2.0? If so then just grab any head from 88-91. I would venture a guess that 82-87 is same also. We used a motor from an 87 in my 83cav.

I don't know much about the Phase 1 motors, but the head on a 90 and a 91 2.0/2.2 are the same. Then from 92-94 the head is the same. The headgasket is the same from 87-96 for the 2.0L/2.2L motors. The exhaust manifold also uses the same bolt pattern.
