Only engine for the 89 was 2.0 OHC, either turbo or n/a

They are non interference. The 2.0 is very unreliable though. I am currently swapping mine to a 3400/3500 hybrid. The 2.0 i have has been rebuilt 3 times and only had 38,0000 original miles on it.

Interesting you find the 2.0 unreliable, my 2.0 on my 1984 skyhawk ran 155,000 miles and was still running just fine when it was plowed into by a drunk driver.

If regularly maintained it lasted just as long as any other motor...

They were a poorly designed engine, with a high failure rate. That is why the engine was discontinued in other cars after 1990 and only used in the Sunbird and didn't make it into other cars after 94. That is why it was replaced with an ohv. It was one of the worst 4 cylinders GM ever produced.

My '89 Sunbird SE 2.0L turbomotor (the "Brazil Engine") went untouched for 230,000mi before it puked. And my '84 J-2000 logged 215,000mi and was running strong before it was used as a trade-in. Keep these engines oiled, and they'll last a long time!!
Take care

Agree, Had multiple 2.0 Cavs and they ran great for over 200k with NO mechanical problems at all. But I do think the best Cav was the 2.2 1990 with a 5 spd, it had more power at 230k when I traded it in than the the previous 80's Cavs. ( I did have a new 94 Sunbird with a 2.0 and a 5 spd and it seemed underpowered but still reliable, traded it with 100k for a 96 Saturn and never looked back) I used these as company cars and put an average of 4-5k a month on them and not one ever left me stranded on the side of the road or towed home.

Just CHANGE the darn oil!!!!
