Rattling in the trunk...what's going on?
Tuesday, May 06, 2008 1:41 AM
Whenever I'm driving at slow speeds over any type of rough road (doesn't even have to be bumpy, just rough), I get a hollow rattling sound, almost like 2 boards clanking together. A kind of muffled noise. I read on here that it probably meant I had bad strut mounts, so I replaced them, the noise might have gone away for about a week or so (or it might have just been my imagination), but then it came back. Then I got rear-ended, car got fixed, I got it back, again the noise was gone for a couple days. Now it's back.

I took both struts off the car today just to try and figure out what keeps making the noise, everything looked nice and tight. Took the mounts off, they didn't look broken or anything. Put everything back together, tightened it all up, noise was still there.

Could the new mounts have failed that quickly, or is something else wrong? The struts are original with 60,000 miles on them and don't appear to be blown.

I'm talking about the rear struts, not the fronts.

Ride quality is not effected by the noise. Not bouncy or stuff or anything, it feels the way it always has. Just won't stop making that annoying noise.

Weird. Did you check to ensure the spare tire and jack are all secured where they should be?

Id also check trunk alignment make sure its tightly closed, and see if the trunk internal handle isnt hitting
also check your speakers sometimes the plastic brackets come loose

loose lumber noise in the rear = bad rear strut mounts

You're saying they failed in less than 2 weeks? Damn.

its very possible yes

also at 60k , the stock struts/shocks are wasted

might also wanna check the rear package tray , make sure nothing is loose , like the speakers , or the metal itself , you can also eliminate things as possible issues , by taking stuff out of the car

I've never replaced my rear mounts. They were shot so we packed washers around the rubber part and it's held together for years.

What do you mean packed washers around the rubber part?

And the noise appears to be less in warmer temperatures; it's most noticeable when it's cold. Don't know if this means anything important.

like a few said rear strut mounts. The rubbers shrinks a lil and gets stiffer when cold that's probably why the noise appears more when cold. Less when warm because of being softer and expanding. The nuts might be a lil lose also might want to check on that. There in behind the carpet type stuff in the trunk right above the wheel well. But don't crank on them since there suppose to be tourqed. Alos might want to think about changing the struts on either of your rides since the plain out suck. My mom has a 05 ls with only 36,000 on it and rides like crap now compared to what it did when she got it new. But that might be because our wv roads too, but she babies it when seeing a bump or pot hole she about dead stops and says i don't want to knock it out of line. Any way i say mounts since i'm also getting the same noise.

I guess I'm going to have to replace them again

I took everything off the car and tightened it all up a week or so ago and no change.

Well now that the weather's heated up significantly, I don't hear any noise. And my fronts have never made any noise.
