EVENT - those pictures are NOT like the one's i received. the main spring first of all, is GREY, and is more conical. its HUGE. i got one of the first versions probably. they are Slammedfire's original set.

i forgot to mention that they COME OUT OF A BOX IN ONE PIECE. its just like the picture, no assembly required.
you just take the the three bolts off the top mount and the bottom two on the hub and drop your old ones out. there are NO parts to swap over or share.

I've come to notice you really haven't seen these in real life, have you? How can you even judge what kind of ride quality a coilover set has to offer by the picture? I used to have HP's and Koni's and the ride quality was HARSH, but that was because the roads suck here. they're lovely on our new roads and highways. not to mention that the response was much better because of the high spring rate.

All in all, if RK actually started making them with bearings, that would solve the binding problems. with regular sleeves, people have managed to make their own things to keep them from binding. the one i used was just take 5 washers and grease them up and put them between the topcap and the mount. It solves it fine as long as you keep them lubed and grit free.

mike if you have been around here for a while, you should already know i had the 1st pair ever shipped.

the come out the box, yet they do not have the strut mounts included. these you do yourself.

i will refer you to this post as i was the first to get them and install em... you can also call rksport and talk to mike perez about this or basically anyone on this board.

http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=3&i=39606&t=34348

and like said, if you have a cavalier. the bearing is on teh strut mount. since you had the hp;s on before, more than likely you already removes the bearing cause for sleeve coilover kits, the strut mount beaing is not needed. however for the rksport ones the are. spring color has absolutely NOTHING to do with the kit at all... the fact that the front springs widen near the top of the coils is proof enough that the bearing from the strut mounts, which you apparently dont have is missing from your setup. you should have saved it when you installd HP coilovers. if you didnt then you need to buy some.

and once again, rksport doesnt need to make them with bearings cause the stock strut mounts already have bearings with them...

and if the front ones are more conical, then you dont have the full coilover kit. the spring opens up near the top. the ones i have were the first set shipped for sale to the US. even got mine before karo, and karo lives in california... i'm in md on the east coast.

also since you seem to have issues with the setup, do you have any pics of it? <br>

"and if the front ones are more conical, then you dont have the full coilover kit" meant to read, "if the fronts are more cylindrical..."

just trying to help you get it right man. trust me on this. stock strut mounts DO come with bearings. those are the bearing the rksport pro street coilovers ride on. if you have those installed, you would not have the noise. i bet my best pair of nikes on it, and in size 15 they are hard to find... <br>

so since we're on the topic of good vs bad coils, both sleeve-style and complete...
have we heard anything about folks actually using the kw setup yet? i recall a recent kw post saying someone had ordered them from one of our org-based companies, but i'd looooove to hear feedback on 'em.

but i didn't swap the mounts! i literally took them off the other car and put them on mine. so you're telling me that if i buy new mounts with bearings the coilover will seat on the stock bearing?

thats the BEST NEWS!

also, i've been a member since 2000, but i don't read much here. only when i need information, like i do now. if there were a post count though, i'd probably be in the 1000 range.

anyway, your information is a lifesaver. i swapped with my friend and didn't know that they used the stock mounts. clayton had HP's before too and removed the bearing as well. i totally thought the RK's came with the mount and didn't think anything of it when we swapped them in mounts and all.

nah man. they were supposed to come with em, but near the last second, due to the low price and other reasons not released, they never came with mounts. but the stock bearings that come with the mounts... thats ALL that you seem to be missing.

get em in and let us know how you like em then <br>

hey Event....I jsut spent the last 45 mins reading your stuff on suspensions trying to become better educated on this stuff. I still don't know what is the better way to lower my cav. Mainly my car will be an everyday driver but I want it to look mean once I get my new 17"ers on there. There is the possibility of shows if I pick up a sponsor. Just give me nudge in the right direction man....thanks

I am gonna bump this once...hopefully get a reply. I know absolutely nothing about all this talk of springs and coilovers. I know I am going to run 17's with 225/45/17 tires once I get them. I have no clue how much I will need to drop the car or what I should use to get the desired look. Can anyone help me out?

oh sh*T, never saw that reply.

better way?

up to you. depends if you want the option of adjustability or not. if you mean by choice of springs or coilovers.

if you are worried about height level and adjustability, def go coilovers. reason being, if you get springs, you are stuck at the height the springs are rated for, until you change the springs. cutting or heating is not advised.

with coilovers, you can adjust it to whatever level you want.

http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=3&i=43287&t=43234

read those two posts and they should give you a more in depth understanding on lowerin. if not just ask a specific question back here and someone will get to it. def more than me on here who can answer.

also coilovers generailly will be in hte 800+ area. but well worth it in my thoughts for what you get out of them... <br>

OK here is a question....if I was to go with coilovers, do they include everything I will need or are there other parts to purchase? I ask alot of questions cuz I know very little about suspensions.
Re: How 2 spot cheap coils vs quality coils &
Monday, July 07, 2003 6:08 PM
nah its cool.

depends. coilovers come in all sorts of completeness levels.

sleeve kits like ground control, rksport, mantapart --- you will still need struts to complete.

full kits like rksport, KW, mantapart full, and their billstein setup--- you have everything you need, but you have to take like the strut mounts from the original setup after you take the tock stuff off. not hard though.

but the main thing i would say is for the sleeve kits... struts. dont go low priced here. the spring manages height and rebound. the struts are ALWAYS the manager of how fast or slow the car goes up and down... <br>

yeah I understand I was just saying that if I had a dollar every time some one asked about the quality of a certain coilover I wouldn't have bought another cavalier. this post is very helpful

Okay.. so I am wondering this. The Rk sport Full coilover setup that you have to use the stock mounts with? Are you able to adjust the height on them cause i know it says something like that it sits 2" lower than stock height.. but are you able to slam them suckers to different heights or not.. I have been wondering this since the rk full setup came out..
