GM Strut bar help (hood issues)
Thursday, February 17, 2005 3:32 PM
Okay guys...i just got this decent ebay strut bar. Went to install it and it bolted up fine. Great lil bar for 26 bucks shipped. Anyways...went to close my Rksramair hood and it wouldnt clear the hole for the ram air hood. Heres a old crappy pic of the underside of the hood.

Now...will the gm bar (22604347 is the bar with no cruise control mount, one bolt to the firewall) clear the underside of my hood. I searched religiously and couldnt find what i was lookin for. Found a cavvy but i wasnt 100% positive on the answer. So...will it clear?

IF so...does any sunfire owners or even cavvy owners have a pic of this bar installed so i can see exactly how it misses the hood? Ive seen pics of the bar itself but i wanna see some of it installed.

BTW...anybody want a nice strut bar (front)grey with black ends for cheap? The ends are a circle (nice) for all 3 nuts/bolts.

Here ya go. It follows along the firewall instead of coming up and over like the aftermarket ones do.

Doesn't RKSport say that the normal strut bars won't work with the hood? Now even their strut bars? The GM one looks nice because it doesn't stick up. My only concern would be the crearance by the TB.

I guess yall didnt read what i said?

I BOUGHT a normal strut bar and it wouldnt work (cuz of the ram air port thingy on bottom side of hood) so i searched and figured out that i NEEDED the gm strut bar. I wanted pics (just like little foot posted) so i could see how it was bent out of the way of the hood.

I KNOW the GM bar fits...I was just curious how it did fit. Now after seeing the pics i know.

Thanks for posting though!!

i like the GM bar...this was my first suspension mod on a base model cavalier, and it really made a difference, now if you're installing it on a car with full suspension setup, u probably wounld'nt notice it much

It's not as noticable, but it's still important.

I have RSM rear strut bar.
Buying all new mounts (probably by this end of the week so i can install my struts)
I just bought Koni Yellows (actually got them from UPS today, thanks karo)
Im gonna run the Goldline springs that i have now
BUYING the gm bar (next week)
BUYING the addco rear sway bar (used from jux) here in the next week or so
and i bought some energy suspension tie rod dust boots (stocks are gone)

i think it will be alot better!! Rides lil a ragged out bouncing cabooose with noise!

RedFire....I'll trade you STRAIGHT UP for your bar! I have the GM bar for NO CRUISE and it doesn't fit my car because I have the PCM and Cruise right there in the same spot! If you could take some pics of your car with the bar on so I can visually look at it and all! I'll do the same but it doesn't fit mine worth a lick lmao! Thanks alot and hopefully we can make this deal!

bballjamal@aol.com or just post it here as I'll check back!

GM stopped making them when they stopped making the convertibles midway through 2000. They're made specifically to stiffen the convertibles so look up a 2000 Z24 convertible and you'll find the part.

damn you and the two tiedowns to the firewall. Mine only has 1 like WW's.

But i dont have a hole pre-drilled there that can fit the tiedown. What do you recomend for the tiedown, just a regular screw or a washer/bolt or something? Maybe i'll drill a hole there if i can find something to hold it in tight with.

Yeah, I thought they didn't make them with 2 anymore. It really shouldn't make a difference but it's still kinda cool.

In order to use it, you'll want a 3/8" automotive grade bolt with a couple washers and a nut. You need 3/8" so that it fills the opening in the strut brace. The whole point is to keep it from moving laterally, not to hold it flat against the firewall.

3/8" great, thats what i needed. I can get titanium bolts where i work. the 1 perk of my job. Thanks WW.
