OEM Rear Struts/Springs..Compress By Hand??
Saturday, March 05, 2005 10:05 AM
Basically as the title says...can a average person compress(by hand, without the tool) the rear springs when wanting to fit the top mount to the strut ..everything is oem ..i'm fitting a new top mount with a new strut..using the old springs ..i think i can do it..if not alone but someone to tighten the bolt and one to compress..reason i'm asking is that its saturday and the tool rentle place is only open weekdays,, parts are sitting on my floor and 2 days off..you've all been there, you know what i mean

i wouldn't try it i couldn't put springs on without using a spring press
and if your planning on taking off that top mount you have a potentially
dangerous situation without clamps on it.

Keep in mind that this is the rear, not the front. The rear doesn't have nearly have as much weight to deal with compared too the front springs. Heck i've done the front without clamps or a press..you do it while there on the car. Dangerous, but when you work at a dealer its all about bonus time. But i don't work at a Gm dealership and i don't know how much these rear springs can be compressed by hand

NO, the stock springs on the rear definitely will NOT compress by hand. aftermarket springs will, but definitely NOT stock ones.

When I replaced my g/f's 97 Sunfire rear shocks and mounts, I definately needed spring compressors. Better safe than sorry.

Do the auto parts stores in your area have a "Loan A Tool" program, where you put down a deposit, and get 100% of your deposit back when you return it? I know that the Autozone and Checker here do that, and maybe the Advanced Auto Parts.

both front and rears can be taken apart with out a spring compressor , its best to have 2 people if you do it that way

and do be VERY carefull

the rears do not have alot of pressure on them

the fronts i wouldnt reccomend, but the rears, ya not a problem, only the rears can be put togther w/out a spring compressor, i did it last week, just put it all thgother, push down on the mount with the assembly sitting on the floor, and thread the nut on, its easier to have someone put the nut on 4 ya while ur pushing down, but it can be done by one person,

how weak areyou people that are saying you cant compress a factory rear spring enough to get the upper mount on? hell i only weight 165 pounds and i can get the springs on and off the strut! It usually works much better with 2 people.. one to press down on the top mount, and the second person to guide the strut in to the mount and put the nut on.

well i fitted the new rear struts this weekend..you don't even need a second persons help for these. the hardest part was removing the bottom strut bolt(siezed)..i managed to compres the spring on the strut with one hand and the other to fit the nut..piece of cake and i only wiegh 150..took me about 2hrs for the first one(being that the bottom bolt was seized) and a total of 20mins for the second
