Front strut mounts, a few questions....
Wednesday, October 13, 2004 10:14 AM
I've been getting some hardcore creaking when turning the wheel and have been told I need new mounts, to which I can believe.

Is there any benefit with going with the 95-99's, over the 00+, and rumor has it I need to mod something to do so? Sorry wasn't sure what to search for and just need a quick answer.

Also in the 95-99 mounts you can buy bearing replacements correct? What would they be referred to? Is it a kit, or what?

Thanks!

If you go to 95-99 mounts with lowering or stock springs, you will need to get a new upper spring seat. I had posted the part number for it a while back...like 1-2 weeks ago...oh forget it I just did a search and found this:

2.4 CavaWeir (a.k.a. jiggamon) wrote:22130318 is the front spring seat (you need two)
22177920 is the front bumpstop (you need two if replacing)
22129486 is the rear bumpstop (you need two if replacing)

just ge tthe spring seats...

95=99 mounts are more user friendly in my thoughts...

i mean sure the 2000+ are two pieces and there are a few more pieces with the 95-99's, but they also offer replaceable parts....

basically the spring seat numer is posted above...you can use the spring insulators... rubber ring that cushings the spring from your strut mount setup....

but basically autozone or advanced auto parts of shucks kragen, checker, whatever is local where you are, and pick up a set... about 45-49$ per mount... doesnt come with the spring seat... just mount and bearings... <br>

and you will definitely need the seat, because the cup that holds the dust boot protrudes down through the top of the spring. The 2-piece mount, the spring sits on the bottom piece and the dust boot snaps into that. I prefer the 95-99 mounts as well.

What could be possibly salvageable from the junkyard? The guys there would give me the whole mount with seat, hence why I was wondering if the bearings can cheaply be replaced and where from .

You guys are awesome, thanks.

any part that is rubber, you do not want to use from a salvage yard. It will deteriorate. The mounts may work for a bit, but they will most likely deteriorate fast depending on how long they have sat. Take the seats though, those are plastic. Then you dont have to buy them from GM, although they are only like $4 a piece.

believe it or not i bought some rubber insulators alone from gm, those are 11$ per insulator locally.

I'm a cheapass so good deal!

Do the 95-99 mounts last longer than the 2k+ or is it just me? My '96 never had an issue, and it also sat 1/8" or so lower than my 2k+ with the same springs.

dunno, never had my 99 2-piece mounts in long enough to worry about them. Switched over to the 95-99 when I had my GCs on.

Oh and by the way, they are referred to as 2000+, or 2k+ mounts, but late model year 99s had them on too...like mine.

no seats needed if you go to coilovers. Only with drop springs.

well im planning on koni yellows and sportlines so im assuming the 95-99 mounts will be good. is this for the front AND the back? should i buy both sets from the 95-99 or should i use the 2k+ for the rear?

the rear mounts are the same from 95-up

with any of the mounts you'll have to drill out the hole through the mount because the shaft on the koni is quite a bit larger.... i'd say stick with your stock ones for the rear so that you'll at least have some practice working on the rears and if something goes wrong you can always buy some new ones (which is what i was going to do til i found out that rears are about 50/each... booo)

i'll be installing my koni/gc setup on the 23/24. good luck man

$50 each for rear mounts? Dude, I paid $22 a piece.

The fronts are $48 a piece. All at Advance Auto.

I'm in the middle of a Koni Yellow install and I'm replacing my crappy 2000+ style mounts with the older style. I'm a little confused as to where all the pieces go though. Here's what I have...

Monroe "Strut-Mate" Front mount #901946 includes:
- Upper mount
- A huge flat washer/plate the size of the bearing
- Bearing (white on one side, black on the other)
- Big dome washer
- A "T" shaped washer

I also have the spring seat and insulators from GM.
My new strut boot/bump stop is TRW #14101

As for my trouble...
Basically I need insstructions on how this all goes together... so far this is what I think it should look like:

1. Upper mount
2. Big huge flat washer
3. Bearing... with white side against the huge washer
4. GM spring seat

Now I'm left with the big dome washer and the smaller "T" shaped washer. I see many places these will fit. What is the correct placement? Also, is my assembly list okay so far? When I opened the box they had the bearing installed the opposite way, but I turned it around because it seemed more snug that way... I wish I could take pics

Read page 4 of this pdf file. It will instruct you on the strut mount mod.

sorry ken, i feel your pain buddy, i'm redoing mine today/tomorrow

are you doing just struts with regular springs or are you doing coilovers???

if you're doing coilovers, i can help you out

if you're doing springs, i can't, and that pdf file will help a little with the diagram on page 4
