Getrag is soooooo much better. You cant put much power through the isuzu at all. I have a 96 Sunfire and swapped to a getrag when I did my 3800 swap.

Depends on what you're doing. If you just wanna pop one in and leave it, that's fine... go with the Getrag.

With the Isuzu you can swap out to the actual ISUZU gearssets and such (something that's not been de-spec'd by GM and made weak as hell) and hold just as much if not more power than the getrag. In addition to a 4.11 final drive and close ration gearing.

The Getrag is probably better for driveability tho. The Isuzu shifts kinda rough anyways, and from what I understand when you swap to the Isuzu gearset the syncro's are different so it shifts harder. The Getrag also has a syncronised reverse gear (meaning it wont grind shifting into reverse) the Isuzu does not have a syncronised reverse gear.

Really the Isuzu MK7 is a masterpiece.... just not after GM got ahold of it.

what would you suggest i do... i will have a GM supercharger and 50 shot of nitrous, about 250+ HP. Should i leave the isuzu alone or go with a getrag? the isuzu's first gear winds out INSANELY FAST and there is basically no first gear. The first time i dump the clutch with these mods the tranny is going to blow sky high. Will i be ok with the isuzu?
First.... you really should put your car in your registry so we know what you have by looking.

Second.... at that power you're VERY likely to blow the differential out of the Isuzu. That's the known weak spot. I dunno how much it takes to tear out the Getrag.... but if you wanna swap, i know there's some modification that needs done.

If you can keep the differential from breaking, the Izuzu can handle alot of power. So either use a older Izuzu differential, or some how find a Quaife and you will be ready to go.

The gearsets would come from a Geo Storm GSi. I dunno if the stock final drive for them is 4.11.... but i know there was a 4.11 gear available for it.

For the best differential.... anything that wasnt designed my GM. Any Cavalier with 2.2L 5spd from like 93 and older would also have the stronger diff.

Put it this way.... the Isuzu 76mm tranny was so strong that at 450hp the Isuzu guys were breaking axles. The tranny escaped unharmed.

mantapart.com have the 4.11 final gear for the isuzu and a few gear set. They have some gear for the Muncie Hm282 and the Nv. as of now, I don't know anybody who blow a Muncie tranny in the quad family(Hm-282) only axle.

You need to start hitting up some junk yards man. I'm talking about the stock pieces. The ones that the cars came from the factory with.

Actually this really doesnt have to do with durability rather than reliability because at 15,000 miles my car needed the whole transmission rebuilt at GM's cost so I have not had a good experience with the Getrag and it feels lousy when shifting and notchy but this is a personal experience that has put a damper on my car other than that im sure its a strong tranny..........
The Isuzu is a pile too. It dont shift the greatest either. I honestly do feel however that it would be a lot better if the cars came with Rod linkage instead of cable linkage. But ya know.. cheap cheap cheap.

I called Mantapart a couple of weeks ago, and they don't have anymore 4.11 FDR's and gearsets for the Isuzu. Also, he called a couple of Isuzu dealers looking for them, and the part #'s are discontinued

eli ireLanD9 ,
That is the car you want the differential, FDR, output shaft, 3rd and 4th gears from

96-99 2.4 Isuzu gear ratios

1st - 3.73
2nd - 2.18
3rd - 1.33
4th - .92
5th - .74
3.94 FDR

That's what you want. Just swap the gearsets over. I dont think you can interchange the individual gears (maybe you can, i'm not sure). I know the 2 trannys use different syncro's.
