Isn't true dual coming from both heads straight back. ie Each head has its own exhaust straight back?
yes if you had a v6 or a v8. however you can get a 4-2-1 header and just make a custom flange and 2 pipes to replace the "to 1" pipe. hook up 2 cats 2 pipes side by side and 2 mufflers and there is your 4cyl true dual.

will it do anything? good or bad? i have no clue

yeah that would be totaly useless on a 4 banger.

as for the orignal question if you look it up in any muffler shop the smaller one is a resonator muffler. not a full working one. the pipes usually go to the big muffler then out of the big muffler to the smaller resenator muffler.

its an ok set up. true dual on a 4 banger is useless.
The way GM built it the flow goes directly to the primary one on the driver side, the pressure, I guess the BACK PRESSURE (oh no I said it!) is what makes the exhaust go to the other one, if the primary one was a freeflow muffler I doubt anything would go to the second tube.

Thats what I think anyways. My dads GTP had the same thing, larger on the driver smaller on the pass 2002
They sound good on my 2004 GT. Has any one run a stock single exhaust sunfire or cav next to a stock sunfire with the dual mufflers? Any differance in sound or performance?

Performance probably not. Like stated before, the Z24 only has single exhaust and the GT has dual. Same engine, same performance. I'm not sure about sound though, probably different.

I have a sunfire Gt and the exhaust sounds deeper than my friends Z24 both stock exhaust systems

Yeah itll sound deeper because it has 2 mufflers to make 2 noises, that small muffler has less flowing through it but when you open it up it flows more (obviously) and since its smaller its louder. I like the sound of it, I have a stock 2005 sunfire as a rental right now, its a non GT model and the exhaust sounds so quiet.

There will be a difference in performance, believe it or not, the GT will probably have less power (and by that I mean keeping it around 1hp, absolutely nothign noticable) but you have a single path of exhaust that has to get cut in 2, the pipe sizes will differ and you will have to split the flow, 1 of them going farther than the other (the secondary muffler) Therefore reducing flow minorly. Its probably nothing you will notice, but its also heavier than the stock-stock one.
