2.2 ---> 2.4 swap, help...
Saturday, January 22, 2005 4:34 PM
Alright, my brother has a 96 Sunfire. It has the 2.2 in it. We are looking into doing a swap, and are thinking about doing the 2.4, and putting a turbo on the kit. What all needs to be done when swapping over to the 2.4? Is there a write up of some sort out there to do the swap, if so, can someone send me a link? Thank.

u need to, get the 2.4 engine, ecu, maybe the gauges....other than that everything bolts right up....I think, correct me if I'm wrong
It'll bolt right up But I'm pretty sure that ur gonna have to reroute lines maybe even new ones and then U will need an ECU,Harnesses,Gauges Not Sure about the Radiator either & Resevoir Tanks either,Ex.,Coolant ,Washer.
If you're sticking with the same range... ie. 96-98 LD9.. then it's a bolt-in install... and plug and play for the PCM. if you go to a newer motor (99-02) then you have lots of swapping and stuff to do.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, misinformation. I've posted on this topic numerous times, and unlike a lot of people who 'think' they know, I've done this exact swap (with an '96 also). Do a search, if you still can't find the info, email me.
Matt, I hope you're talking about the others and not me... if not please let me know

I've done the swap twice.. and I thought I had a good idea of what was involved

Not you John. I assume you know what you are talking about. However, what does "plug and play" with the PCM mean?
Assume? LOL!! That's your first mistake

Plug and play... you install motor and tranny... with proper engine harness... plug in the main harness (big connector near the firewall) to the rest of the harness.... and plug in PCM (from the 2.4L motor) and you're good to go.

If you move too far in years... the pins change place and you have to re-wire stuff.. no longer plug and play.

so you mean that the 2.4l could use the 2.2l ecu???

No, can't use the 2.2L ECU. you need the 2.4 one.
That was my question as well John, I thought you meant plug the LD9 harness into the LN2 ECM.

Yup, John is right. Stick with the '96-'98 engine (EGR engines).
so will the 2.2 harness work?

probably, but the placement on the connectors will be too short/too long, the motor is basically flipped, the exhaust and intake are switched. So if you keep the 2.2 harness you will have to extend the lines, it would be easier to get the 2.4 harness.

but would it be easier to extend a couple of wires than ripping the old one out?

This is for those how HAVE DONE THE SWAP, AKA John or Matt.
My first swap fell through (didn't lose any money) so I am starting again, but I can get a motor from a bud in my club for $40, just the motor, no alternator, etc, etc.

WHAT are the parts that I need to order to get this engine running?

Is there a difference between the 98 and 99 2.4's? I thought they were the same.

i also thought that going from the 2.2 to 2.4 you need a new axle

I thought that too, maybe only if your converting to the 5 speed? I dunno, just a guess.

Whoa, haven't seen this thread in awhile.

Answers:
1) The harnesses are not interchangable. The 2.4L has two ECM connectors, while the 2.2L has three (I believe). Regardless, switching the entire harness is a snap compared to cutting/modifying the other harness. Just unbolt the engine harness from the body harness (see the huge connector by the drivers strut tower) and put the new one in.

2) In order to run the engine you'll need:
- Engine
- All engine components (alternator, starter, ...)
- Wiring harness
- Exhaust (engine to cat)
- Radiator lines (not the radiator, they are the same)
- Heater core lines
- fuel lines (I cut and spliced the body lines to the engine with barbed and hose clamps)
- power steering line (see above)
- tranny
- axle shafts (not sure if they vary, see below)

3) Engines:
-'95Z was a 2.3L
-'96-'98Z was a 2.4L with EGR and one-wire knock
-'99 was a 2.4L w/o EGR and with two-wire knock
I choose to use a '98 engine since my car was a '96 and in the same category as above (plus it's what I could get). However, since I've had the computer reflashed to '99(non-EGR woohoo). So I see no reason a '96-'99 engine shouldn't work in those same year cars. Don't quote me on that though.

4) Axle shafts, I swapped a 2.2L into a 2.4L body, and vise versa. While I had the four shafts sitting there I looked them over and couldn't see a difference. That doesn't mean there isn't one, just that I couldn't visually see one. Regardless I put the 2.4L shafts with the 2.4L engine.

Post more questions if you got them.

I'm looking at doing the same swap, but with an 02 instead of a late 90's.

You say that you need to replace the tranny- is this still true with the Getrag equipped engines, or can you just swap the bell housing since the internals are identical? Also, I'm assuming that when you say he'll need the starter and alternator, all that jazz, you mean if he's starting from scratch, or do those not transfer from the 2200 to the 2.4? How bout those motor mounts? I'm assuming they would be completely different, am I wrong? These are a few questions I still have after reading around.

when you guys say replace the wiring harness you just mean the half under the hood or the whole thing?
Re: 2.2 ---> 2.4 swap, help...
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 12:10 PM
WOW...... alot of you guys need to go back and re-read the info. Its pretty much all there. But yet you ask the same ???'s over and over.

Motor mounts...... look at all the ones on the market for the J-body....... THIER THE SAME FOR THE 2.4 & 2.2 OHV..... (ecotec upper is different)

Trans..... the 2.2OHV and 2.4 have DIFFERENT bell housing bolt patterns. You can swap the bell housing (one half of the trans case) or you can swap the whole thing.

Axles..... 2.2 3 speed auto, different then the others, but 2.2/2.4 4 speed auto, all the same....... same with the 2.2/2.4 5 speed...... (auto same as auto, 5 speed same as 5 speed)...... one exception.... the '96 5 speeds have a 2 piece pass. side axle..... BUT IT BOLTS IN THE SAME FOR EVERY YEAR (meaning they all swap)

ENGINE HARNESS = the harness under the hood. Different for both motors..... example.... 2.2 HAS NO CAM SENSOR, but the 2.4 does.

BODY HARNESS = the harness in the rest of the car. Pretty much the same, just stay in the year brake-ups (00+ harness different)

ECU/ECM = Engine Control Unit/Engine Control Module (5-speed cars, since it only controls the Engine)

PCM = Powertrain Control Module (Auto cars, since it controls the WHOLE POWER TRAIN..... engine and trans)

if that doesnt answer everything....... SEARCH cause this is not the first time this stuff has been posted.
