Update on my POS car
Friday, February 11, 2005 1:56 PM
I'm sure the majority of you have read all of my bitching comments about my car, well thigns are looking a little better as of now. Though I'm still having problems they are properly getting fixed this time around.

First, my last recent thread about my car was throwing a rod through the block, which turned out to be #2, smashed right through, almost clipped the starter (according to the dealership anyways, I couldnt see the damage well enough)
And that happened 4602km after it was rebuilt by wheaton because #1 spun.
And I've always had problems here and there with my clutch, it would grab inconsistently, occasionally change its grab point and sometimes just not allow me to go into gear even though its fully depressed.

So they put in a new engine, didnt take too overly long, but they got an engine ready for auto, so I had to wait for flywheel bolts. But they put it in and ALL my clutch problems were gone when I got the car back. I wasnt use to it grabbing so low, and all the time so I was happy.

But the more and more I drove it, the lower and lower it would grab, until finally I was out of pedal travel to disengage it properly. So I figured the only explanation for that would be air in the lines, its compressing and not allowing the fluid to properly disengage clutch. So I got to work driving it without the clutch properly, but then when I got there it wouldnt go into any gear regardless of what I would do. So I bled it in front of work, I didnt have too much fluid left in the resevoir so I could only bleed a little bit.
We did about 4-5 pushes so we could leave the fluid at an acceptable level until I could buy some more, only the first push had a touch of air in it. We did a couple more to make sure though.
After that I fire it up and it goes into gear, not easily, but back to the way it was the night before. So I figured its a mechanical problem or a hydrolic leak elsewhere, but no fluid was found anywhere. Me clueless now.
But I go to drive it (I was working pizza delivery this night) and I get to the persons house, and purposely park on their angled driveway incase I have problems reversing I can use the momentum to help get it in gear. Not even that helped. I was stuck halfway in the street, couldnt get into any gear.

So I called my girlfriend to come drop off her car and help me park mine, she let me use her car for the rest of the night. After work we go back to my car (still sitting infront of this guys house) and I fire it up, hoping maybe after a cooldown it will work, well it goes into gear but its still grabbing a little, meaning that with clutch in, in 1st and brakes on it wont move. But I let off the brakes and it moves forward like an automatic. So I was thinkin "Damn, gonna wear the hell outta my clutch like this" so I left it in neutral and called roadside while keeping warm in my running car. All of a sudden I smell something, but I ignored it, about 30secs later theres smoke inside the car.

Turns out the cylinder went sideways (or something) and leaked fluid all over the clutch and it was burning off, and the clutch was burned up too. Not overly bad, but it wont last too long.

So I've got a new engine in already, now I've got a new clutch and pressure plate coming in (still stock ofcourse) and master and slave hydrolic cylinders.

Now the only problem that hasnt been adressed (and hasnt come back YET) is my ABS. I think its a flaky wheel speed sensor, more than likely on the back axle that when it gets wet, sets off a code and the ABS stops responding until I turn the car off and back on and its fine. It happends 90% of the time when I go through a car wash.

So I'm hoping that with a new engine I shouldnt have any stupid problems, or wierd CEL/SES lights or a rod through the block :| new clutch should fix the problems I was having, and the cylinders are being replaced for good cause. I had a new driveshaft on the driverside already and they replaced the passenger side on when they did the engine. So aslong as my transmission stops grinding all the time (assuming it was the clutch) I shouldnt have a single drivetrain problem. But if the tranny still does it, lets hope I get that replaced and I'll have a whole new drivetrain on the car.

But things are looking up a little, atleast I'm getting taken care of.

Damn man that truly does suck, I thought my 03 fire was bad all started three months after I bought it, everything had to do with the damn tranny! At 15,000miles the tranny was rebuilt under warrenty and everything seems good SO FAR!!!! Knock-on-wood!

Just Wait and See..........

Some advice. Dont go to the dealer anymore. Call GM and they will send out someone to the dealer you bought it at. My teacher had wayyy less problems then you and they wouldnt replace the car so she called gm and they sent someone out and gave her the same car, it was a special order when she bought it, and so they did the same thing and gave her a year newer. Also they gave her money back, and extended her warrenty and all that good stuff..

I thought my car was a lemon...

Damn man that sucks, its having all the problems, but to me i think your problem could be your through out bearings, Thats what was wrong with my car when the clutch went out, and it screwed up the shift linkage which is why it doesnt want to go into gear.
The only way i was able to get the car to the shop was to have my dad drive it. only use the clutch on starts and stops, and clutchless shifts. I cant do a clutchless shift so therefor i had to have my dad drive it there. anyways

My car has had 3 new head gaskets and needs a new one, because the cooling fan went out so i wired in a nice little switch were the cigaret lighter used to be works just fine now, the clutch had gone out in it too, along with that i have mass electricle problems that i think ive gotten to the bottom of now, but the car has a ground somewhere, been through 4 alternators in 50,000 mi alternator battery wire burned up at the post got that fixed, ohh and not to mention as of now my parking brake light is on,

All i got to say is that when she runs she runs awesome.

its all about power to weight

As soon as there was a problem you should have called roadside assistance. Bleeding the clutch yourself is a bad move specially with the problems you have had. GM could blame your problems on you doing that kind of stuff. If you want to get things resolved with your car you need to be the squeaky wheel. Call them at all times when the car isn't functioning properly and have it dragged in for warranty work.

i can find several reasons why you're having problems at the dealer(s). First of all, you're young. You've had your car back there umpteen times for major drivetrain repair. Maybe you're being hard on it, maybe you're not. But the general consensus is that young people beat their cars. Additionally, dealers don't get paid as much for warranty work as customer jobs, so they're less willing to tie up a mechanic with a "lemon"-- especially for huge jobs like pulling out a motor/trans. Mechanics don't like to get these kinds of jobs either, since they usually "lose" money getting paid on flat rate. I know you've had alot of hard times with your car, but its never OK to lose your temper and swear at someone in public, it's not going to get you anywhere. If you were less angry you might find yourself in a better situation.

I really feel bad for you though, I think you're getting the runaround. I'm so surprised your car hasn't been bought back by GM. Good luck.

I know I was rough on the guy before, but it wasnt really "in public" it was just me and him when we were talking and your right about the drivetrain repair, they dont always want to keep working on it. Its sad when my service advisor knows my home and cell number without having to look it up. Its also sad when I go in there and everyone knows me by name (not in a bad way, I just normally talk to everyone there).
I'm happy with what wheaton is doing now, I hope the synchros are fine, as thats all thats really left to go on my drivetrain (except the gears themselves, but thats less likely)

They said the throw out bearings where fine, just the clutch got burned up and soaked in hydrolic fluid.

GM Couldnt pin it on me, I always do all my own technical work and I have on all of my cars, and never had a problem. I know how to do all this minor stuff without even breaking a sweat. I was at work, what else was I supposed to do? Really... Roadside takes forever to come get me, I had to try to finish my shift (didnt know if I would be allowed to use my girlfriends car at the time)

We have nothing like that for me, nothing up in Canada at all. There is Camvap, but thats not what I'm looking for.

Just now my alternator died and wheaton wont look at it, so I have to wait till wednesday to take it to SMP. I know my alt is gone because I can hook up a batt charger and the batt wil stay above 12. But while the car is running I go down to low 11's in voltage while driving, my dash will turn on and off, guages will go all funky, lights, abs doesnt work, odo reads error....

Burn that thing man. Sounds like your going to have nothing but trouble with it. If it's not one thing it's another.

Re: Update on my POS car

No kidding, now the alt killed the battery (driving aorund with <11.5V not good) so it wont hold a charge, if I turn the car off the lights dim and I cant start the car after 2mins of sitting. So I'm charging it overnight right now, see what the voltage reads after I disconnect it for 10mins. (in the morning)

Well my charger is stupid, but it got up to high 14V while charging. Unplugged the charger and it just gradually dropped. Its still being crappy, but wed it should be fixed.

Geez Dallas if it was not for bad luck you would have no luck at all. One of my friends is a mechanic at Park Pontiac in Wpg.He showed me a 2003 Ecotec he had apart number one bearing spun 26000 km. It was repaired under warr. But he also showed me the Sunfire the engine came out of the frt. tires are bald. The car has a 5 spd in it and the clutch is also badly burned. Hope yours gets fixed and stays together for you.

if you have a big amp or anything i might take that out of the car before you bring it in for an alternator repair... drawing too much current tends to kill alts pretty easily
