My speedometer just started jumping around today, what might be the cause? I looked at the sensor on the wheel and everythings cleen and connected there and then now im thinking when i tried wiring up the shift light i messed up a connection there. Any thoughts?

ok if your speedo is floating or jumping at a higher speed and there is no problem with the speed sensor itself then what i can be is the reluctor wheel on the differential...thats the plastic gear on the diff that the speed sensor sits above to tell the speed......if it has a crack in it then at higher speeds it will open up enough to cause the speedo to float...check the sensor first

Isnt there 4 wheel speed sensors? One on each wheel? The front two sensors look easy to remove but the rears look like they are part of the wheel hub. Is the plastic part your talking about in therE? Or am i way off...
ok, so i have been on a quest to intall my shift light. ive been going by what people have said on this forum and tired two different wires. But neither worked so i disconnected the spliced in wire that supposedly goes to a tach terminal. So today on my way to frys my speedo starts jumping around and randomly looking like its "off" then coming back and displaying correct speed for a while. Now is this a problem with the tach, a sensor, or did i mess something up by trying to wire in that tach? Even though the wiring is back to normal? I had everything wired back up half assed with butt connectors so i thought maybe they wernt connecting good...
So I tried a different approach. Would using silver wire instead of copper mess up some kind of resistance or something necessary for the computer? Because in an attempt to fix the problem i had to use some extension wire because the original wires became to short to soder together and heat shrink. So would that be the cause? Or should i look elsewhere? The local chevy told me 98 sunfires had cluster problems and that it was probably the proplem. They are $350 bucks off the bat to replace just for the part.

the wheel speeds sensors are for ABS....the speedo sensor is on the tranny

yea its the vss (vehical speed sensor) its in the tranny, up front. i believe it has purple wire coming out of it. expensive little part. 110 at the dealer near me.
well im going to the yard tomorrow... im gona try and pick up a cluster and a vss sensor out of a wrecked car. The only years my cluster is the same is in 98 and 99 sunfires right? Or does the cavi in those years have the same one too? And then what year vss sensors match?
