Problem with Dig. Odo. (99 Cavi)
Tuesday, March 22, 2005 11:31 PM
ok. since about december i've been having problems with my digital odometer in my 99 cavalier. it'll work fine for awhile and then it'll either...

a) trip light and the . (period) for the trip will blink on and off sporatickly (sp?)

b) all the numbers just get screwy. like none of them show up as actual numbers

c) and this last week, the whole odometer went blank on my cross state trek.

and clues on what's wrong with it and if there's anything that can easily fix it?

thanks in advance.

mines doing the same thing rigfht now on my 99z, its obviously just a bad connection somewhere, the trick is finding where the bad connection is, and also there isn't usually much you can do about it besides either finding one in a junkyard or getting it replaced with a new LCD screen thing.

My advice would be to just take your dash apart and check the ends of connectors and wires in the cluster area for loose or broken leads, and if your soldering iron is handy, fix the connections yourself.

Just SLAP the top of the dash it will come back to normal. I also have a 99Z.
I can not find were there is a loss connection, I will probly get a new cluster.

My 99z does it all the time. What the hell is the big deal. It shows up when the car is not running fine, but as soon as the car is running...jibberish.

oh well so what. It still records the miles.

My digital odometer went out after raido swap, and hasn't worked since. Do I need to replace the instrument cluster?

2000+ clusters seem to respond well to 'smacking the top of the dash' technique. No idea why. Even some GM techs do it.

99 digital odos just seem to have issues. Mine did it once in a while too. I smacked it a couple times, it was fine til I upgraded the whole electrical system to a 2000.

Mine has done it a couple of times, i think its just something internal and probaly not worth fixing.

But i just got a 99 sunfire cluster im going to swap in in place of my stock cavy no tach cluster.
