rear drum removal if.....
Monday, February 28, 2005 7:33 PM
i've done a search and didn't find anything on the forum regarding this dilemma.. how would you remove a drum rusted to the hub without heating it... i've tried penetrant, hammer, Big F--kin Hammer and more penetrant, tried to pry with a flat head screwdriver, tried a big ass pry bar(well as big as it would fit).. tried a punch no luck. i was told there was adjustment screw to back off the shoe or lining.. but didn't see a screw that fit the description of what the person was telling me to look for... i don't care about saving the drum as it needs replacing anyways, but i'm just trying to change the hub assembly and i'd rather not go to the shop if i can help it.... so i'm open to any advice anybody has to offer... thanks

Why can't you heat it?

i don't have a torch... but was just wondering if anybody had idea's that i hadn't tried already, or little tricks if there was any.. but i didn't want to take it the garage so i can save some money, but if i have to i'll take it and they can pull it off for me. i'm just changing the hub assembly on it .. but if i had a torch or know someone that had one i'd do it.

i had the same problem, if you hit the center part of the drum it will free up the build up and release the drum

Ive used a hammer and just had someone spin the drum slowly while beating the back of it...

Prying on one side, then the other doesn't help too much when they are really stuck- you're just shimmying (sp?) it back and forth.

WD-40 and a "BIG" hammer...soak the whole thing with loose nut..wait 30mins then soak some more, then beat the @!#$z out of it...if that doesn't work then you didn't swing hard enough..and if all else fails heat if up with a propane torch then beat it some more..it will come off, but just a side note..you don't have any of those lock rings on the studs in front of the drum, if so take'm off it'll make life easier..don't laugh..ppl have forgotten

if you have tried beating it like that then you might have a wear ridge where the shoes wern't touching. on the back of the backing plate there should be a punch out or a gromet where the starwheel adjuster is. remove it. stick a screwdriver thru there and back off the adjuster a bunch then try to remove the drum

You will be able to "feel" any resistance if your shoes are binding on the drum by rotating while you are pulling it off. I have a feeling your problem is just the rusting to the hub. I had a similar problem and was able to break it loose with PB Blaster penetrating oil and tapping with a hammer while a helper was prying the drum off. Before you rent the drum puller, do what Andy Gonzales said and whack in the center of the drum nearest to the hub.

God bless America.

use a pully puller, drum puller or any other name that u want to call it, devise with 3 little "arm" things, hook it onto the drum, twist the nut with a ratchet and socket, and pop, it will come off, watch out, if it is really tight, those things like to really pop off of there

Back when I had my first car, my drums were rusted to the hubs and all the WD40 and pulling at it was getting me nowhere. When someone told me to hit it with a hammer I used a rubber mallet... I could have been there a million years with that thing lol.
The way I eventually got them off is to bang REALLY hard with a regular metal hammer around the center, which caused plenty vibration to loosen up all the rust and it came right off. So that's the day I learned to use a metal hammer to loosen rust, not a wimpy rubber one.

Just make sure your shoes aren't against the drum.......adjust the starwheel and hammer between the lugs.......or on the lip of the drum

If u wanna go through the trouble of rebleeding blrakes. You could release the valve to the wheel cylinders... There would be less tension put on the the shoes.

well here was my problem when i was taking mine off. There were two little metal clips that were around two of the lugs and they were holding them on. so what i did was take a pair of clippers and cut them off of there. Just look and make sure that you dont have these on there or they wont come off without you tearing something up.

Those little clips were meant to hold the drum on the car while it was moving down the assembly line. they are not needed so if you do come across them you don't have to put them back on.
