The bong in the fender well is there to cut down on the noise of the air coming in . Once you remove it you can actually hear the air being drawn into the engine . Like when you stick an intake on the car and rev..... you can hear the engine is louder . The bong is opposite it makes the engine less noisy . You will not get more power by removing it or more fuel economy . A quote from Mishkafan " it is a bit meaner sounding " .
Yes you may see a quickier throttle response . But you will not see any higher numbers in HP or TQ if you put the same car on a dyno .

I don't have anything to back my opinion up, but how is it that if you remove something that is restricting airflow to the engine, that you don't get any HP/TQ from it? It seems to me like if the engine can draw more air in, them the ECU will adjust and throw more fuel in, thus making more power. Does that make sense, I'm tired...
well if you put in a K&N and remove the bong you might notice a difference like I did. 2HP max

Okay, i have my cav, but i still don't know how to remove the bong. So what you guys are saying is that in the wheel well, i have to remove the top liner, then i will see three bolts that need to be unscrewed to get the bong out. Now is the bong right near where the air intake meets the fender(is it in between, or is it inside the air intake before it hits the filter. sry, i have been looking at my cav air intake but i don't see how you take it apart from the fender. Thanks.

I did it on my sunbird, definitly could hear a difference, and a big PITA to remove from the fender area (The bottom portion that is) I ended up putting it back in when i thought i was gonna trade the car in, but decided i wasnt going to. It does sound "Meaner" and the intake noise is more prominent.
ok so i have a cold air intake that goes down through the fender, is it bypassing the bong by having that? or if i took it off would it still make a difference?
^ yea it bypasses, you can take it out, but it wont make a difference, less weight maybe, when i took mine out it was bolted to my winsheld washer resavoir, that made it a pain the ass, i had to take that out as well, and def. jack up the car, it makes it easier.

just a stupid question.. but isnt that 'bong' ur talking about just a resonator? allows air to circulate in it and just reduces noise>?
I cant imagine how it would increase any power atall unless you think more noise = more power like 95% of f&f people.

This isn't the first time I've done this, but i did swiss cheese the bottom of my airbox, with either 3/8, 1/2, or 5/8's bit...<---- i can't recall
(it all started when i had my VW)
The sound does get a little louder, and the power, i dunnno, i did that at the same time i started putting in 93 octane... well between the two, i feel a diffrence, (not a huge one though, but noticable,) plus the thought that my car is getting cleaner fuel makes me feel good inside " and thats what counts"

it really doesnt make much difference in horsepower i did the v6 swap and when i did i had the bong out , and left it out for a while , i drove it for a couple of weeks , i ended up putting it back in and i didnt have any power loss , but i took it back out because i liked the sound it made , i think it sounds like a police car !!! lol !
