Hello, need a little help on this problem.I have a 96 sunfire 2.2, 5 speed,wifes car.
Check eng light comes on eng dies, cranks won't start.Fuel pump runs, has good spark, Pulled codes: P0172,P0342.Would either of these cause this condition.Where should I start to trouble shoot these codes? Any and all help appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a bad camshaft position sensor.

Looks like it's the timing chain, pulled the valve cover and cranked it no rocker movement. This would probably explain the codes I'm getting,no cam rotation no signal,
and with the valves not opening you get a build up of fuel which explaines the rich condition. Now the fun begins.I really shouldn't complain though this car has been trouble free to this point,297,000 mi. and this is the first major problem.

Will the coils still spark with the cam sensor not working? Interesting as I am having a similar problem on my 98. Is it possible for the chain to stretch or slip enough to keep the engine from running?
